First Hard-Drive-Free, Pocket Size Media Recorder and Player That Records Directly from TV

Super skinny RoverTv features built-in timer, vivid picture, and unlimited external memory for people who like their entertainment to go

Doghouse Electronics has unveiled the first-of-a-kind RoverTv, a super smart, super skinny portable media recorder and player that records directly from TV without a computer.

"RoverTv establishes a new category of handheld TV recorders and players," said RoverTv designer Jim Howard. "We built RoverTv hard-drive-free to streamline it and make it durable. Hard drives are chunky and fragile - they were never made to withstand the day to day handling that's a normal part of enjoying a portable media device," said Howard, noting that RoverTv's Flash drive and SD technology provide unlimited external memory. Built-in software allows easy transfer of video/music content to and from a Mac or PC.

Howard says RoverTv satisfies rising consumer demand for more ways to enjoy the media they purchase. "With cable, satellite, downloading and broadcast, people have instant access to record media. RoverTv adds value, opening endless options for recording, transferring and viewing the media they've invested in." RoverTv charges no recording fees and no monthly fees.

Available in the 3.5-inch "Big Screen" ($299.00) and the 4-inch "wide-screen" ($349.00), RoverTv also offers another industry first-it's the first of its size portable media recorder and player that fills the surface of the device with screen rather than controls. RoverTv's unique design places the controls on the outer edge, maximizing display size. RoverTv allows consumers to record directly from TV, DVD, CD, FM or computer and accommodates MP3, MP4, WAV files and more. RoverTv supports TiVo To Go(TM) for viewing content recorded to TiVo(TM) and can download content from iTunes(TM), BurnLounge and other electronic media providers. RoverTv is equipped to store JPEG/BMP/GIF photos, videos and presentations.

RoverTv features a Samsung TFT screen, crisp video resolution (320x240 for the Big Screen, 480 x 272 for the Wide Screen), USB port, AV input/output and FM radio receiver. RoverTv is powered by a rechargeable, built-in lithium ion battery that lasts a minimum of 12 hours for uninterrupted audio or 6 hours of video. Video stored in RoverTv can be viewed on any television up to 42" via the AV output, or on PC. RoverTv includes USB cord, battery charger, AV cable, premium TXB ear buds, one 1Gig SD card and one 2Gig SD card, enough capacity to store eleven hours of television or 4200 songs. RoverTv is available through Doghouse Electronics, http://www.rovertv.net.

My eyes...they do deceive me!

I just arrived from a 4 hour drive from Maine...I wanted to head over to the Boston Pocket PC meeting tonight. Before I left for the meeting, I decided to check my email...the picture above was in the first email. I thought my eyes were going nuts!

If you take a look at the picture, let me tell you ... it is not animated! Your eyes are making it move. To test this, stare at one spot for a couple seconds and everything will stop moving. Or look at the black center of each circle and it will stop moving. But move your eyes to the next black center and the previous will move after you take your eyes away from it.... pretty cool!

In any event, the Boston Pocket PC meeting will start at 6:30 PM at the Microsoft offices in Waltham, MA (201 Jones Road, 6th Floor).

Included in this meeting will be -
Tech Ed 2006 Wrap-Up: For those unable to attend Microsoft's premier technology event, Don Sorcinelli and Steve Hughes will provide a wrap-up of news and information.

Software Demo Derby: If you've wanted to see some of the latest Windows Mobile applications in action, this month's meeting is just for you. Real time demonstrations of applications like Orb, SlingPlayer Mobile, Windows Media Player 11 and others will be presented.

Project-a-Phone: Will give a demonstration of their current and upcoming imaging devices let you give a live demo of your phone screen or take screen shots and record audio/video clips.

Hope to see you there!!!

Pepsi, Motorola Launch Ringtone Promotion in the US

Pepsi and Motorola have launched the Pepsi Cool Tones & Motorola Phones promotion, a large-scale national promotion across the USA. Music fans can download new ringtones written and recorded by top artists specifically for the ringtone format, a length of 40 seconds or less.

The companies are teaming up to offer access to 150 original music and voice ringtones by Grammy Award-winning artists and producers. Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, The All-American Rejects and producers Scott Storch and Luny Tunes are a few of the artists who have produced new ringtones that will only be available through the Pepsi Cool Tones & Motorola Phones promotion.

There will be approximately 800 million Pepsi packages participating in the Pepsi Cool Tones & Motorola Phones promotion. One in three codes found under the caps of the Pepsi products will be good for a ringtone at the official website for this promotion.

The website was developed and is powered by Yahoo!.

Consumers will find a unique code printed under the cap of specially-marked Pepsi products, including Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Diet Mountain Dew, Sierra Mist and Sierra Mist Free. Fans can then enter the code at the website to learn instantly if they will receive a ringtone.

The winners can select a ringtone from a catalog of more than 150 selections located on a custom ringtone store built on the recently launched Yahoo! Tones destination, where consumers can find the latest ringtones, games, wallpapers and more to personalize their mobile phones.

Each Pepsi Cool Tones & Motorola Phones code is automatically entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win a Motorola RAZR, Motorola SLVR or Motorola ROKR phone, with more than 12,000 phones to be awarded during the promotion.

In support of the promotion, Pepsi and Yahoo! developed the idea to create one of the first full-length music videos ever produced specifically for ringtones. Mary J. Blige and The All-American Rejects star in two separate videos that feature the original ringtones they wrote and recorded exclusively for the Pepsi Cool Tones & Motorola Phones promotion. The music videos, which include a medley of several of the artists' ringtones, will premiere exclusively on Yahoo! Music. Blige's video is currently featured on the site and The All-American Rejects' video will be up later this month.

Logitech Video Technology Featured in Microsoft's New Windows Live Messenger Platform

With One Click on a Logitech Webcam, Users Have Easy Access to Windows Live Messenger Features

Logitech is powering the Video Call feature in the new Windows Live Messenger platform, unveiled by Microsoft Corp. today. Logitech worked with Microsoft to design the client technology that delivers high-quality, full-screen, fully synchronized voice and video calls. Logitech provided the same audio and video technology for Microsoft's Video Conversation feature, part of MSN Messenger since April 2005, and the company has supported the popular webcam feature in MSN Messenger since March 2003. In addition, Logitech plans for many of its future QuickCam(R) webcams to feature one-click access to Windows Live Messenger capabilities.

By using a webcam with Video Call, people can see and talk to friends and family around the world for free. Since the original introduction of Video Conversation, MSN Messenger users have conducted more than 500 million video calls. In fact, video usage on MSN Messenger is currently growing faster than voice-only usage -- in January 2006, users participated in video calls that lasted a total of nearly 1.1 billion minutes.

"We're very excited about our continuing work with Microsoft, and the momentum that we've established with MSN," said Junien Labrousse, senior vice president of Logitech's Entertainment and Communications Business Unit. "Video calling, with Microsoft's extensive customer base, has proven to be a breakthrough application for live video communications. Microsoft's new integrated Live interface makes it easy for people to see friends and family members online and spontaneously engage in a video call. We expect this will help personal video communications to become even more popular."

Logitech, with a rich history and expertise in video and audio delivery over IP networks, provides technology that synchronizes audio and video streams and allows these communications to traverse firewalls and Network Address Translation (NAT) devices, which have often blocked video communications and frustrated consumers in the past. Logitech also operates the servers that support Video Call.

Windows Live, a new set of personal Internet services and software, is designed to bring together, in one place, all the relationships, information and interests people care about most, with enhanced safety and security features, across their PC, devices and the Web.

"The mission of Windows Live is to deepen our customers' relationships with the people and the information that are most important to them -- and live video communications is an important piece of that," said Martin Taylor, corporate vice president, Windows Live and MSN at Microsoft. "Logitech's industry-leading video and audio technology is integral to the success of this application."

All of Logitech's QuickCam(R) webcams are fully compatible with Windows Live(TM) Messenger. Logitech, which has sold more than 30 million of its award-winning QuickCam webcams worldwide, has developed advanced hardware and software technology for many of its webcams that optimize the live audio and video communications experience.

Some of these innovations include:

-- Logitech(R) RightLight(TM) technology -- A system of hardware and software technologies, RightLight technology vastly improves webcam image quality in a wide variety of lighting conditions. The technology combines advanced sensor technology, sophisticated firmware and high-quality lenses that together deliver greater sensitivity to light (especially in low light), optimized skin tones, and minimized distortion of images.

-- Logitech(R) RightSound(TM) technology -- By combining a webcam's microphone with acoustic echo-cancellation software, RightSound technology provides people the flexibility of conducting video calls without wearing a headset. Integrated with the webcam's software drivers, advanced software algorithms eliminate echoes created by a webcam microphone and speakers in close proximity.

-- Logitech(R) Video Effects software -- The first-of-its-kind software allows people to completely transform themselves into three-dimensional animated characters (avatars) that precisely mimic facial movements, or to add accessories to their on-screen image, such as glasses or a crown.

Educators First to Test Negroponte's $100 Laptop Prototype

Negroponte will also Deliver Keynote at Premier Ed Tech Conference

Educators from the U.S. and abroad will be among the first to test-drive prototype models of Nicholas Negroponte's much-discussed $100 laptop (http://laptop.org) during the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) July 5 through 7, in San Diego. NECC is presented by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

"ISTE's NECC will be the first public forum at which we not only show a working prototype of the $100 Laptop, but also provide hands-on access to developer machines," Negroponte said. "Furthermore, selected conference attendees will be invited to participate in our developer program."

Information about the developer program can be found at http://wiki.laptop.org/index.php/Developers_Program.

Thanks to Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child Initiative (OLPC), journalists and NECC attendees can try out the $100 laptop's casings and motherboard. OLPC staff will be available to answer questions.

Negroponte, co-founder and chairman emeritus of MIT's Media Lab, is one of the most influential thinkers and doers of our time. He is also NECC's keynote speaker, and will be discussing the latest about the $100 laptop project. The goal of OLPC is to revolutionize education by putting a compact, durable, no frills, but Internet-ready computer into the hands of millions of children worldwide. Negroponte is a founder of Wired magazine and author of the bestselling book "Being Digital."

NECC draws 15,000+ teachers, teacher educators, technology coordinators, library media specialists, administrators, policy makers, and exhibitors from around the globe. The exhibit hall includes more than 500 of the industry's most influential companies and service providers -- many of whom announce new products at the conference.

In addition, NECC offers dynamic speakers, practical demonstrations, panel discussions, workshops, Internet poster sessions, research papers, a Global Gallery, and a fun and inspiring Student Showcase. NECC is the largest and most comprehensive event of its kind in the world.

NECC is presented by ISTE (http://www.iste.org) in cooperation with the California Computer-Using Educators with additional support from the San Diego County Office for Education. An overview of the entire program and schedule is at http://www.iste.org/necc/schedule/.

Ruckus, Aruba Team to Build Reliable 802.11n

Wireless Leaders Unveil Plans to Collaborate on Advanced 802.11n Solutions That Address Growing Concerns over Performance Predictability, Security and Reliability.

Ruckus Wireless and Aruba Networks today announced that they are collaborating on the development of advanced 802.11n products and technologies that help corporations, service providers and consumers safely migrate to the next generation of Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi).

Under the joint development, the companies are creating new high-speed 802.11n solutions that combine centralized control of wireless networks with essential capabilities not found in emerging pre-N products, such as smart antenna technology and dynamic RF optimization.

The new products will integrate innovative features such as dynamic signal path steering, interference avoidance and real-time optimization controls developed by Ruckus Wireless, with adaptive radio management (ARM) and wireless intrusion prevention (WIP) technologies developed by Aruba Networks. The combined solution will automatically select the best channel and power levels for 802.11n access points, detect 802.11n rogue access points and continuously mitigate interference by selecting the best signal path in real time based on the RF environment, receiving device and traffic type.

"When two industry leaders collaborate on next-generation technology, expectations are justifiably high," said Craig Mathias, principal research analyst at the Farpoint Group. "While we've got a ways to go before 802.11n is finished, it's not too early for enterprises to get it into their planning. I'm looking forward to seeing the benefits of combining the advances Ruckus Wireless has made in such demanding wireless applications as streaming video with the enterprise-class RF management capabilities for which Aruba is famous."

The Future of Wi-Fi with 802.11n

802.11n, the next step in Wi-Fi, is designed to significantly boost the capacity of wireless networks by more than quadrupling the speed of the current-day technology. While 802.11n will push Wi-Fi performance and scalability to new levels, neither the draft standard, nor the current Pre-N technology, is ready for production environments. Ruckus Wireless uniquely offers 100%, standards-compliant 802.11 extensions that have proven to deliver reliable range and performance in pervasive production networks around the world.

Today's Wi-Fi technology (802.11a/g) operates at a theoretical limit of 54 Mbps per second. 802.11n will operate at 200 Mbps or more by using multiple transmitters and receivers simultaneously. But this also increases the number of things that can go wrong with the integrity and security of the transmission. 802.11n will also permit doubling of the channel width to increase physical data rates. This, and the added transmit and receive radios, raises the potential for interference with nearby wireless devices. Therefore, the ability to dynamically control where Wi-Fi signals go, adjust the multitude of new parameters and tightly secure the RF environment is key to a robust 802.11n network. Ruckus Wireless and Aruba Networks will work to develop an application-focused control framework to address these difficult real-time optimization problems.

The new products, to be delivered immediately upon ratification of the 802.11n standard, are expected to be the first, centrally managed enterprise 802.11n solution that adds important wireless stability features necessary to ensure predictable performance. In addition, the companies agreed to enable Ruckus Wireless access points to be managed by Aruba's mobility controllers to support enterprise telecommuters and emerging managed WLAN services by service providers.

Aruba and Ruckus Wireless will also collaborate to solve the deployment and security challenges created by the new 802.11n wireless standard by optimizing the selection of 20MHz or 40MHz operational modes, burst modes and other capabilities that are introduced in the new standard. digy

"We are teaming with Ruckus Wireless because they are the experts in next-generation RF technology," said Keerti Melkote, co-founder and vice president of Marketing for Aruba Networks. "802.11n is too important to the enterprise to merely throw out into the market a complex and high-priced solution, especially one that doesn't address the important issues of signal reliability and interference mitigation. Ruckus has demonstrated that they can add tremendous value at the lowest cost with proven technology that solves all of these problems in a flexible manner."

"802.11n is strategically important to enterprises, service providers and consumers alike, but it must be delivered with real products that are reliable and dependable," said Selina Lo, Ruckus Wireless' CEO. "When the standard matures and is implemented everywhere, users will see more interference, not less. This collaboration with Aruba, clearly the most innovative enterprise WLAN vendor in the industry, will give us the expertise and distribution channels to solve these issues for enterprises and service providers."

Ruckus Wireless plans to extend its patent-pending BeamFlex technology to 802.11n, making it available by the end of 2006. BeamFlex-N is expected to be capable of supporting three or more simultaneous high definition (HDTV) video streams.
