REVIEW: ModPod - MP3/WMA FM Modulator
Sometimes it’s the SIMPLE things that make your ability to Experience Mobility better and more enjoyable. The ModPod is a simple device that offers an array of options for you to be able to enjoy your saved music.
The ModPod is a rather simple but unique 3 in 1 MP3/WMA FM transmitter. Simple because it just plugs into your car’s DC plug, unique because it offers you the ability to use not only a direct line-in, but in addition, you can use an SD card or a USB device. Very cool, very simple and it works like a charm!
How do you listen to your MP3s? Do you use an iPod? How about a PDA? What about CDs? I don’t know about you but I use all of them depending on what I’m doing. I have a quite a collection of music stored on my players and have started to develop a cadre of SD and mini SD cards that have different types of music to play depending on my mood and the device I am using. More and more, I have been using mini-SD because I can use an adapter for an SD slot…I like that because of the flexibility it offers for device choice.
I like listening to music with my iPAQ or K-JAM and often you will find me with my earphones attached as I am “puttering” around the house or if I am walking the shores of Maine. But driving is a different situation…earphones are just not appropriate. I just find it too restrictive and possibly dangerous depending on the driving conditions. Besides, the stereo system I have in my car is far superior to any set of earphones I own. The result is that I usually relegate myself to XM radio or a CD while driving.
The ModPod offers a terrific means of listening to your music while driving. You can insert your SD card into the top of the device and BAM, you’re listening to your music through your car’s FM radio using any one of 15 pre-set FM stations. Now, if I have saved some great songs for listening on my iPAQ, I can take the SD from my iPAQ, insert it in the ModPod and enjoy the full effect of my car stereo as I drive…very cool.
Of course there are songs that use Digital Rights Management, so a problem exists with placing the storage medium in another device…not a problem. You just insert a cable from your device to the Audio Input and you can listen and enjoy that great sound from your device….terrific when my son wants to play his music from his iPod! And for those of you that save music on a USB Flash Drive, you’re covered too! The ModPod will accept USB drives as easily as it does the SD or line in.
Three great options tied into one nice unit…I like it, it’s flexible and it enhances my ability to Experience Mobility while “on the road”.
How easy is it to use? VERY EASY!
Insert the 12 Volt adaptor end of the ModPod into the cigarette lighter or DC power receptacle, tune your FM radio to one of the 15 pre-set FM frequencies used by the ModPod, using the Channel Button(+/- buttons),set the ModPod to match the frequency you have set on your FM radio and you are good to go! How easy is that?
So you’re ready to go, now what?
Just choose the medium (SD, USB, or Line In) you are going to use, insert in the appropriate slot and you are ready to listen.
For SD and USB cards, after you insert the card, the LCD will display an icon for your SD card or USB device, the elapsed time, A for automatic or S for shuffle mode and the broadcast frequency. As your music files play, the Artist and file name will appear at the bottom of the LCD.
Press the play button once to start playing an MP3 or WMA file. Pressing it again will pause playback. If you press and hold, it will enter shuffle mode allowing random selection of titles. The mode icon will have an “S” instead of an “A”.
If you press the forward button, it will advance to the next file. If you press and hold the forward button, it will to increase the volume up to 21 levels. Pressing the back button will take you to the previous file and pressing and holding the back button will decrease the volume. I told you it was simple!
Using the Line In is just “slightly” different because of the volume control. You insert the 2.5mm plug of the supplied cable into the jack on the side of the ModPod and attach the 3.5mm end of the cable into the headphone jack of the device. Set the volume on your device and adjust the radio volume to the level you want. Start your playback and enjoy your tunes!
So, how does the device look? Is it a quality unit?
The ModPod has a nice appearance. The design is smooth, has well placed and easily accessible buttons and a decent lighted LCD display. I would have liked to see a brighter display but that is because of my tired old eyes….my son said it was perfect. Ahh…. youth!
When you hold the device, you know it is a quality unit. The look, the feel, the perfect seams…it is definitely well made.
Performance…how well do you like it?
I’ve used this device for several weeks and have been really happy with it. The six position adjustable joint between the device and the DC plug has been perfect for each vehicle I have used it in. The quality of sound has been very good; of course quality is determined by the type of files you place on your storage medium. An extra fuse has is supplied in case you need it…I have not had to use it.
One feature I have enjoyed is the ability to have the Random/Shuffle Mode as well as its memory for the last song played.
