Palm unveils the Treo 680

Palm announced the Treo 680, a new Treo for the average user. The new line will have multiple colors.

Press Conference Highlights:

  • Ed Colligan, CEO of Palm wants to extend the reach of the Palm Treo line to more of the world.
  • Palm Treo 750v will reach other markets rapidly.
  • The Palm Treo 680 has upgrades to user experience to make the device even easier to use.
  • Versamail 3.5, supports Microsoft Office and PDF documents, editing, viewing, and creation.
  • Revamped Multimedia Application - MP3, Streaming, Pictures/videos, and voice memos.
  • No External Antenna.
  • 64MB SDRAM / 64MB User memory
  • 1200mah Removable Battery
  • SD/SDIO Expansion Slot
  • Thinner and Lighter of earlier Treos
  • Comes with a 1gb SD card and 30 Days of Yahoo! Music Service
  • Six Apart's Typepad Mobile Blog Application ( Post blogged live from Press Conference )
  • New Google maps Application

The Palm Treo 680 is targeting the "Mobile Accomplisher", a level of customer that is 9x larger than the "Mobile Proffesional". 

New Marketing Campaign, "Not just a cell phone. A Treo." Palm plans to spend 25 Million in marketing this product.

Some Questions answered by Ed Colligan, CEO of Palm and Phil McClendon, Senior Treo Product Manager:

  • Will the Treo 680 support WiFi? No
  • Are you planning to do anything with Skype? No
  • Are there any plans for a Windows Mobile Version? ( Asked by, Guess who? ) We just launched the Treo 750 and it will be available in the US soon.
  • Will this replace the 700p? No, it will not, it's a different radio technology.
  • Is the Treo 680 manufactured by HTC? No.
  • Will the lack of the antenna affect reception? No, Palm says that the 680 has better reception than previous models.
