HP iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger - Using Auto-Correction in SMS Text Reduces the Available Characters Count

DESCRIPTION
When the auto-correction feature is used on the HP iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger series to create Short Message Service (SMS) text, the SMS available characters count drops dramatically. This issue occurs because auto-correction uses the Unicode text scheme, which consumes more bytes per character (a ratio of approximately two-to-one) than other text schemes. When you create SMS text using Unicode, your text will be limited to 70 characters, as opposed to 160 characters with other schemes.

RESOLUTION
Resolve this issue by disabling either the auto-correction feature or Unicode support on the HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger. Steps to disable both are listed below.

Disabling the auto-correction feature on the HP iPAQ hx6500 Mobile Messenger series

Disable auto-correction by performing the following steps:

On the Today screen of the HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger, tap "Start" and then "Settings."
Tap the "Personal" tab at the bottom of the screen.
On the Personal screen tap the "Input" icon.
On the Input screen tap the "Word Completion" tab at the bottom of the screen. UN-check the "Replace text as you type" box to remove the checkmark.

NOTE: Remember that when auto-correction is disabled, the hw6500 Mobile Messenger series will not "catch" and correct misspelled words, transposed letters, grammatical infractions, etc. The user must manually check the accuracy of a document (proof-read) or copy the text into Microsoft Word and run a spell-check.Disabling Unicode support

Disable Unicode support by performing the following steps:

Ensure that the HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger has been registered with an HP Service Provider; then insert a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card.
On the Today screen of the HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger tap "Start" and then "Settings."
On the Settings screen, tap "Tools," "Options," and then "Account."
Select "Text Messages."
Un-check "Use Unicode where necessary."

NOTE: If Unicode support is disabled Unicode characters will be replaced by a question mark (?) in SMS text messages.
