Using Google Book Search, you can find The Free Library and many other extraordinary old books, such as:

(Please note that we do not enable downloading of any book currently under copyright. Unless we have the publisher’s permission to show more, we display only small snippets of text –- at most, two or three sentences surrounding your search term -– to help you determine if you’ve found what you’re looking for.)
Of course, this is just the beginning. As we digitize more of the world's books -- whether rare, common, popular or obscure -- people everywhere will be able to discover them on Google Book Search.

Stolen smart phones scream to be found

Joris Evers from CNET News.com put up a story on a new service that can remotely make a smart phone emit a "high-pitched wail" so it can be found after it has been stolen or misplaced.

What a "cool" idea....can you imagine "that ear-piercing ring you hear in a restaurant might not be somebody who forgot to set their cell phone to vibrate" but rather someone who stole a phone.

A new service called Mobile Manager, from Synchronica, can remotely make a Windows Mobile-based handset emit an "annoying and embarrassing high-pitched wail," so it can be found after it has been stolen or misplaced.

Cingular Offers BlackBerry Connect for Palm Treo 650

Cingular Wireless, Palm, Inc. and Research In Motion today announced availability of BlackBerry Connect for the Palm Treo 650 smart device. With BlackBerry Connect software, Cingular customers now can enjoy the feature-rich Treo 650 with the BlackBerry service for a robust and secure solution on the nationwide Cingular EDGE wireless data network.

"The availability of BlackBerry Connect on the Palm Treo 650 represents a marriage of two very popular wireless offerings that now gives Cingular customers more choice," said Michael Woodward, executive director, mobile professional solutions, for Cingular Wireless. "Businesses can now leverage their existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server while giving employees a powerful, new wireless device option."

BlackBerry Connect for the Treo 650 enables users to benefit from many popular features of the unique "push"-based BlackBerry architecture via BlackBerry Enterprise Server(TM). For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server software tightly integrates with Microsoft(R) Exchange and IBM Lotus(R) Domino(R) and works with existing enterprise systems to enable secure, push-based wireless access to email and other corporate data. The Treo 650 operates on Cingular's EDGE network, the largest high-speed national wireless data network in the United States with availability in 13,000 cities and towns and along some 40,000 miles of major highways.

BlackBerry Connect for the Treo 650 supports the following features:

-- "Push" Corporate Email delivers messages automatically -- and wirelessly -- to the Treo 650's inbox. Changes to the inbox, including read/unread status and deletion, can be automatically synchronized between the user's email account and the Treo 650.

-- Wireless Calendar Synchronization keeps the Treo 650's built-in Calendar up to date remotely, allowing users to receive, accept or decline meeting requests on the go.

-- Attachment Viewing lets users view Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PDF documents in original format (digy).

-- Remote Address Lookup (RAL) allows users to search their corporate directory wirelessly for email addresses without the need to download every name to the Treo 650.

-- Enables centralized device management, including support for IT policies such as over-the-air device disablement and password device lock, as well as end-to-end security with Triple DES encryption.

"We are happy to provide another choice for companies that have deployed BlackBerry Enterprise Server or are planning to do so," said Tim Roper, vice president of U.S. region for Palm. "Treo 650 already is one of the most compelling mobile-computing devices available today for business users, and the BlackBerry Connect functionality gives Cingular customers another great reason to adopt Treo as a vital business-productivity tool."

"BlackBerry Connect allows Treo 650 users to tap into the power of the BlackBerry wireless architecture," said Mark Guibert, vice president, corporate marketing, at Research In Motion. "We see a growing opportunity for wireless connectivity in the enterprise, and we're very pleased to be working with Cingular and Palm to broaden the reach of BlackBerry and to help customers enhance their mobile communications and productivity."

BlackBerry Connect on the Treo 650 requires a BlackBerry Connect rate plan from Cingular. The solution is available today for Cingular Treo 650 customers through Cingular's B2B sales organization. More information is available at http://www.palm.com/cingularbbc and www.cingular.com/midtolarge/blackberry, or by calling 866-4CW-SB2B to speak with a Cingular sales representative.

The Palm Treo 650 is available from Cingular for $299.99 with a two-year contract and qualified voice plan. Unlimited BlackBerry Connect monthly service plans begin at $44.99.

Xantrex Portable Power Solution for Electronic Devices

Versatile power in the palm of your hand

Xantrex Technology Inc. has introduced the XPower by Xantrex PowerSource Mobile 100, the only handheld power system that can operate multiple electronic products at different voltage and power levels. The PowerSource Mobile 100 is the only compact mobile power source with an AC outlet and two USB outlets with the capability to operate portable devices at varying power levels. This goes beyond products currently available on the market, and it means consumers can now operate or charge a high power product like a laptop, and low power devices such as an iPod and a cell phone all at the same time.

The PowerSource Mobile 100 is compact; approximately the size of a laptop battery and weighs about one pound. It combines a 100-watt DC to AC inverter with a high output lithium ion battery to provide backup power for mobile devices. It can be recharged from any AC electrical outlet in your home or office, or from a DC outlet in a vehicle or airplane. It provides both 120 Vac and 5 Vdc (USB) power for use with portable products.

“The versatility of the Mobile 100 is what takes this product to the next level compared to those currently available,” said Xantrex CEO John Wallace. “Not only does it have multiple universal outlets, both AC and USB, it is the only portable power product on the market that can operate both high and low power mobile devices, so consumers only need to carry one power source. Xantrex has been an advanced power electronics leader for more than 20 years, and we’re dedicated to designing the best portable power products on the market. We’ve leveraged that experience to develop this unique product that addresses the increasing power needs of people on-the-go.”

The excitement in the portable power category is a result of the increasing dependence on mobile electronic devices. In 2005, there were 4.3 million Blackberry subscribers, and this year an estimated 185 million laptops and 620 million mobile phones will be shipped according to InfoTech Trends. All of these devices need power to operate beyond their battery capacity, and the Mobile 100 can supply that energy.

The PowerSource Mobile 100 can operate a laptop computer for approximately two hours, a portable DVD player for three hours, a portable game console for 12 hours, or an iPod nano for 72 hours. It can also provide 12 days of standby power for a cell phone and 34 days of standby power for a Blackberry. For more information about the product, please visit www.xantrex.com.

    Pricing and Availability

The new XPower by Xantrex PowerSource Mobile 100 is distributed by Ingram Micro, and is available at Fry’s Electronics and online at www.amazon.com, www.Buy.com and www.xantrex.com/buy.asp. The suggested retail price of the PowerSource Mobile 100 is $129.99 US.

    About Xantrex

(www.xantrex.com) is a world leader in the development, manufacturing and marketing of advanced power electronic products and systems for the renewable, portable, mobile, and programmable power markets. Sierra Wireless Introduces EV-DO ExpressCard

Sierra Wireless today announced the introduction of its ExpressCard product line, with the upcoming AirCard 597E wireless wide area network card for EV-DO Revision A networks. Built for notebook computers with ExpressCard expansion slots, the AirCard 597E will be fully compliant with network operator requirements and will offer user-friendly features such as Assisted GPS (aGPS) location based services; a robust, fixed antenna design; and an external antenna jack for flexibility and improved reception in fringe coverage areas or for specialized applications. The AirCard 597E is expected to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2007. ExpressCard models for HSDPA networks are expected to follow later in the year.

ABI research estimates that adoption of the ExpressCard standard for PC card slots will be significant in 2007, shipping in 45 percent of laptops sold, up from 10 percent in 2006(x). Sierra Wireless will also continue to produce AirCard products in the Type II PC Card form factor to serve the established base of notebook users with PC Card slots. For those with PC Card slots who wish to purchase an ExpressCard product in anticipation of an upcoming notebook upgrade, the company will offer an ExpressCard-to-PC Card adapter accessory.

"Notebook installations of ExpressCard slots are expected to move toward critical mass in 2007 - we are timing our ExpressCard products to match market adoption." said Trent Punnett, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Corporate Development for Sierra Wireless. "The AirCard 597E delivers a fresh new industrial design with a fixed antenna that is not compromised by the smaller form factor - our engineering team has designed the antenna to provide performance comparable to our new AirCard 595 PC Card. Having this level of internal expertise means the company is not reliant on off-the-shelf components, and that enables us to consistently deliver the durable, reliable products our customers expect from Sierra Wireless."

The AirCard 597E wireless wide area network card is an ExpressCard 34 (ie. 34 mm wide) form factor compliant card, compatible with both ExpressCard 34 and ExpressCard 54 slots in newer notebook computers. For customers without an ExpressCard slot, an adapter will be available to allow the use of the card in Type II PCMCIA card slots.

Designed for connectivity to EV-DO Revision A networks, the AirCard 597E is capable of peak data speeds of 3.1 Mbps on the downlink and 1.8 Mbps on the uplink when operating on a Revision A network. For use in areas where EV-DO Revision A is not yet available, the card is compatible with widely available EV-DO Release 0 and CDMA 1X networks.

    The Nokia N-90 Experience

A Very Different Kind of Phone

    Introduction

Several months back I received a call from Andy Abramson of Comunicano , a public relations firm representing some of the products in the Nokia line. In short, Andy told me about a unique program he was starting with some strong support from Nokia. Andy was reaching out to a series of active “bloggers” and popular sites like Experience Mobility and Mobilitysite asking if they would like to participate in this new program.

So what was this program about?

I was impressed with the concept because there were no restrictions. He wanted an honest evaluation on the product --- its pros and its cons. He was specific in saying that the phone was on loan and would have to be returned but that the length of time that I could keep the product would be based on my desire to use it. I liked that! I liked the fact that I could take my time and if I chose to write about it, I could and if I decided not to write about it, that was fine to.

I was clear at the outset that I was an avid HP fan but that I was starting to break out of my shell and was looking at other manufacturers. Coupled with that, I was a Microsoft devotee. I indicated that I had little experience with the Symbian OS and frankly, had little desire to learn anything about it. After all, if it wasn’t Windows….it couldn’t be good. To my surprise, Andy’s reply was: “that is exactly why I would like you to look at it”.

I was immediately impressed with his openness and willingness to loan a phone to someone that could write anything he wanted to write. He must have been pretty convinced that this phone was so superior that it didn’t make any difference who looked at it. I liked what I was hearing, I liked the openness and the honesty and I liked the fact that I could do it using my timeline so I said OK, I’ll look at it. Within a few days I had a package at the door so I was about to begin the Nokia Experience!

    Nokia N-90 Impressions

For those of you that have been following my reviews, you know that I have a distinct like for packaging. It’s not that a package “turns me on”, it is what gives me the “first impression” about a product. If a vendor really believes in their product then they are going to “dress it up” so the user will begin their experience at first sight. Of course, a good looking package doesn’t mean that you are going to have an outstanding product but it is going to give you a little insight into the manufacturer and to me that is important. Needles to say, I was stunned as I removed the box for it shipping container.

    Appearance

Opening the box, I was able to easily slide the phone out from the plastic window and I began my experience with the Nokia N-90. The first thing I noticed was its weight, 6.1 ounces but that was very quickly overlooked as I began to see what this phone was all about.

This is not a normal looking camera phone; it truly is an art piece. Unlike any other phone I have ever seen, this device you just can’t put down. I spent quite a bit of time admiring its look and function and couldn’t help but think about who the person was that designed the phone. They must have an amazingly creative mind!

A combination of a high quality black and silver plastic housing accented with a shinny metal on the sides gave the casing an appearance of strength as well as a rich look. On the top of the flip, there was a small exterior screen surrounded by a mirrored chrome border. The screen is an active matrix and has 65,536 colors (128 x 128 pixels). The right side had a 5 function toggle and adjacent to it was a white push button for the camera. The left side had an input for power and a covered sync port.

The exterior of this phone is awesome! My descriptions can not adequately describe the solid, rich appearance the device has; nor is doing justice to its unique design. I can only hope that the accompanying pictures give you enough of an understanding as to why I was so enthralled with this initial experience.

I had to laugh at myself the first time I opened the phone up. I flipped it open not realizing that it had a dual hinge. As I opened it, I though what a dumb design, you can’t clearly see the screen and the keyboard and then all of a sudden I realized that it was not entirely open. It was not a dumb design….it was a dumb user!

The keyboard has black keys with white numbers that are clearly visible during the day and light up perfectly at night. Besides the typical 12 key array, there are 7 additional keys and a five way toggle button. The additional keys are for left and right selection of pre-selected functions, making a call, end call/closing applications, number/symbol/dictionary selector, clear key, and a main menu key. Functions vary according to the operation mode but all are easily understood as you progress through the options available.

At the top of the screen, there are two selection buttons that are activated for use when the screen is rotated into imaging mode. It is a very slick interface designed for ease of use when using the imaging mode.

The back of the phone has the battery cover that had a different means of holding the cover on. It took me a couple of seconds to figure out how the cover came off but once you do it, it is very easy. Removing the cover, the SIM can easily be inserted. It was a different type of locking system than I had ever seen before but it works…that is all that matters. The battery, which has a neat hologram on it, easily slides and locked into place. Placing the cover back on, I was good to go!

    Initial Connection

It just so happens that where I live, it is rare that I can get a signal. To my dismay, that was the case with this phone…oh, how I was hoping that was not going to be the case. So off to my car and a short ride up the street to the top of a hill where signals are prolific! BAM…it connected and I had full strength. I made a quick call home to my wife to see how it worked…she hates me doing that. It’s the old “hi hon, just calling to see if you can hear me”. Of course, she always answers, “yes, I can hear you and it's fine”. Cool…it works and the sound on my end was excellent.

I decided to try the internet connection and see if I could set up my email. Of course, I had no idea what I was doing because this was a totally new interface for me to work with but it had to easy to set up so I thought I’d give it a try. Of course, I didn’t bring the manual with me so it was truly going to be trial and error. To my surprise, the interface was pretty easy to use…initially I didn’t think it was too user friendly but as I “played around with it” it all started to make sense.

After setting up one email account, I was able to send and receive emails easily so I setup the rest of my accounts. As I set up each account, it became easier and easier and my comfort factor with this new OS was definitely increasing. My only complaint is text entry. I do find it trying to say the least but I am sure practice will make it easier.

    The Camera

Devices today are continually changing to meet the needs and demands of users. For a long time, cameras have been incorporated into many phones but none have ever met my needs. Frankly, I always thought it was a gimmick that I would never use. Picture quality was always questionable but some devices slowly started to incorporate better cameras and you started to get decent pictures that were acceptable for web use. Not so with this phone!

It has been a lot of fun working with the camera using both the still and video modes. I have been pleased with the ability to lock the focus on an object, press the capture key halfway down and have it automatically focus. I would never have expected that ability in a camera phone (frankly, I never expected to see the kind of quality that has been consistent throughout my use of this device).

    The Phone

The voice quality is terrific. I have no question that there was some serious effort placed into the design of the phone and the electronics that control it. I have been really pleased with the quality of the sound and the ability to hear each call clearly. For me, that is particularly important because of hearing issues. The volume and clarity at virtually every signal strength has been exceptional…that makes me happy.

I have enjoyed the conference call function which has been very easy to activate (and some what fun to utilize). The voice dialing feature is also very good. I have over 150 contacts so it would have been a problem if I had to train each one. The voice system supports enhanced voice commands which are not dependent on your voice but rather the device creates a voice tag for your entries in contacts. It appears, as you use it more, that the device seems to recognize the voice commands better. I have liked that feature except when I have several numbers for a contact. I have yet to figure out how to get it to use other numbers that might be listed.

There is a Video call feature but unfortunately I don’t have the ability to use it…that is a feature that I am really looking forward to using. Hopefully it will not be too long before that happens! As for other features, there are many…too many to review at this writing but suffice it to say that I keep seeing new features and have found their use easy to deal with.

As much as I like the sound of the device when the phone rings and as much as I absolutely love the notification alarms, I am disappointed that I do not have the ability to have a vibrate mode. To me this is an absolute must have in a phone so it was a disappointment but I have begun to live without it…albeit painfully so. Vibration mode is so important to me that if I could only wish for one added feature, that would be it.

    Personalization

As with most devices, the ability to personalize it to your individual tastes makes it just that little extra bit nicer to use. The ability to change the pictures on both screens with my own personal pictures has made looking at the screens a very pleasant experience. Customizing the clock alarm tones, the phone ringtones, and changing the shortcuts that are assigned for the different presses of the scroll key and the two selection keys while in the standby mode make the device what I want it to be….I like that.

    Features

There are a host of features that make using this phone a great experience. I was particularly happy that setting up my Bluetooth headset was an absolutely painless experience. Contacts, Calendar, Messaging, and the Web are my most used options on a phone but with the added feature of a superior camera coupled with some cool software for editing; the Nokia Experience has been terrific!

I didn’t expect to see too much in terms of an “office” experience but Nokia has provided some essential tools that are useful and important to maintain your ability to have a continued good feeling as you carry this device with you. The ability to take notes, have a To-Do list, a voice recorder, and a calculator are important. The ability to make unit conversions as in measurements or with different currencies is a neat tool to have but I never imagined that I could view my Word and Excel files…I thought that was very cool.

I wish I could edit the documents but being able to view them is important. What I was able to do though was to pair my Think Outside Bluetooth Keyboard and could easily enter text into a note. At least if I wanted to have changes on a Word document, I could enter text easily on a note and then insert it at a later point in time.

I have used the keyboard numerous times and have found it to be very convenient. I would like to have the ability to directly edit documents and hope that in future iteration it will be enabled.

    Overall Impressions

I guess I am fortunate to have a variety of devices and phones that I use as the spirit moves me. I am rarely without one of my iPAQs; I don’t think I could survive with out them especially my 4700 which has virtually everything I do on it. I would have never imagined that I would use a non-iPAQ much less a non-windows device.

I have found that the experience with my Nokia to be a good one although I readily admit that the learning curve for me was a little harder than I expected. For the most part, I can easily find and do what I need to do but there are still those occasions when I want to do something special and I just can’t figure it out right away but it eventually comes.

An example is the conferencing feature on the phone (I really like it). I was chatting the other day with a friend and I said for him to wait a second while I got someone else on the phone…it took me a couple of minutes. Of course his reaction was: “that was a long few seconds buddy!”

The ability to keep my calendar and contacts always up to date with Outlook has been a breeze. Synching with the Nokia PC Suite is significantly faster and easier than Active Sync. How many times have you synched with active sync and wondered what changes were made…you don’t know. All of a sudden you see that there are 7 changes in your calendar and you don’t remember what they are. With the Nokia, you get to see what changes were made…that is very cool!

With all the devices I have, the fact that I have continued to use this device on almost a daily basis tells you something about it. I have no question that part of it is because it is such a well made device….absolute superior quality. It just feels right…it looks right…and it performs right. How does it compare in size with other devices on the market? You be the judge...I think its size is perfect for me. What I like even better is that when I have it open, I can easily rest it on my shoulder and use my hands for a task...something you just can not due with smaller devices.

There are so many different devices on the market, each designed to meet specific needs of the intended user. The Nokia N-90 is certainly a device that fits a special niche but I would suggest that that niche is a rather large one. The ability to make calls easily and clearly, check and send email, surf the net for that special piece of information you are looking for and to take high quality pictures and videos meets the needs of a large audience.

    What is the Nokia Experience?

To me, it was dealing with a high quality device that easily allowed me to perform the everyday functions I want in a smartphone plus a few added very neat features.
The Nokia Experience has been very cool journey into a whole new world!

EXCLUSIVE PEEK: A NEW computer to "hit" the market!

Probably the best kept secret in electronics history, this new "home computer" will definitely set the standard.  Originally scheduled to arrive in late 2004, production was held off to incorporate Vista and the latest wireless technologies available for the home user as well the enterprise.

We have been fortunate to get a sneak peek picture....

OK..OK, so this is really not what you were expecting but I thought I'd share it with you.  You see, the very first magazine I ever read was Popular Mechanics...oh so many years ago.  My Dad always had PM magazines and we would look and dream about the neat things they had each month.

As I was browsing the PM Archives: COMPUTERS/INTERNET section today, I saw the following PM prediction:

It brought back memories of a Picture from a 1954 Popular Mechanics Magazine

    Logitech - Always Innovative

Sometimes we are NOT mobile and we want (and need) an extraordinary sound experience while at home....this looks very cool!

Logitech introduced the Logitech(R) Z-10 Interactive 2.0 Speaker System, the newest member of Logitech's line of Advanced Peripherals, featuring a groundbreaking design that will change how people think about and use PC speakers. With built-in touch-sensitive controls and a backlighted display that shows digital-music track information, a clock, volume and more, these trophy speakers are meant to be touched and seen -- in addition to filling a room with studio-quality sound.

"Until now, PC speakers have simply delivered sound," said Jef Holove, Logitech's vice president of product marketing for audio. "The Z-10 speakers aim to incite more of the senses -- sight, touch and sound -- with their media display, touch-sensitive controls and premium audio. And beyond that, these speakers are simply stunning, adding a level of design sophistication to their breakthrough digital music capabilities."

The past few years have witnessed the explosion of digital music. The use of Internet radio has also spiked noticeably. According to a recent worldwide survey by analyst firm Parks Associates, 40 percent of online households play music files on their PC and 33 percent listen to Internet radio streams. The Z-10 speakers reflect the growing importance of the PC as a hub for digital music, and the accompanying value of superior speakers to complete the experience. The speaker satellites' polished acrylic faces offer clean, minimalist facades accented by the digital display and each speaker's two metal mesh grills. Perfect for use with either a desktop PC or notebook PC, the powerful speakers deliver rich audio without using a separate space-consuming subwoofer.

By putting touch-sensitive controls on the face of the Z-10 speakers, Logitech has eliminated the need for people to toggle between applications to control their music on their computer monitor. People can continue to work or surf the Web, or even turn their monitor off and use the integrated speaker controls to adjust volume, treble and bass, and navigate music tracks with play, pause, skip forward and back buttons -- just as they would with a portable music player or a traditional stereo system. Using USB technology and sophisticated software, the speakers can display track information from popular media players, including iTunes(R), Windows Media(R) Player, Winamp, and Musicmatch(R). The digital display also reveals a clock, volume levels and other system information from the PC.

The Logitech Z-10 speakers also have four Internet radio preset buttons located on the speakers' touch sensitive panel. When touched, the convenient preset buttons let users quickly save and recall their favorite Internet radio stations and playlists.

With integrated 1-inch tweeters and 3-inch woofers on each satellite, the Logitech Z-10 speakers offer a full range of clear, rich audio with amazing bass for their compact size. The built-in amplifier splits the high and low frequencies -- called bi-amplification -- directing the high-range signals to the tweeters and the low-range signals to the woofers -- an approach that's typically used only in performance home-theater speakers.

Taking up minimal space -- each satellite is 9.7-inches tall, 4.5-inches wide and 4.7-inches deep -- the Z-10 speakers make an elegant addition to a desk, tabletop, or any other place where people might use a PC. A single USB cable provides both a digital audio signal and the information for the LCD, making it very easy to set up. The speakers also include a convenient headphone jack that enables private listening, and a 3.5 mm auxiliary input that can connect to MP3 players or other audio devices.

    Pricing and Availability

The Logitech Z-10 Interactive 2.0 Speaker System will be available in the U.S. and Europe beginning in September. Its suggested retail price in the U.S. is $149.99. More information about the Z-10 speakers is available at the Advanced Peripherals section of Logitech's Web site, http://www.logitech.com/advanced.

New Google Apps for Your Domain Available Now for Easy Email, Calendaring, and More

Google Inc. announced the launch of Google Apps for Your Domain (http://www.google.com/a), a set of hosted applications for organizations that want to provide high quality communications tools to their users without the hassle of installing and maintaining software or hardware.

In addition to customizing the user interface with their own branding and color scheme, organizations can tailor the service to their needs by mixing and matching the email, messaging, calendaring and other tools offered through Google Apps for Your Domain. Over time, Google will offer versions of Google Apps for Your Domain that are oriented toward the needs of a variety of organizations, from family websites and community groups to non-profits and small businesses, as well as universities, large enterprises, and ISPs.

Google Apps for Your Domain, an expansion of the Gmail for Your Domain service that launched in February 2006, currently includes Gmail web email, the Google Talk instant messaging and voice calling service, collaborative calendaring through Google Calendar, and web page design, publishing and hosting via Google Page Creator. Domain administrators use a simple web-based control panel to manage their user account list, set up aliases and distribution lists, and enable the services they want for their domain. End users with accounts that have been set up by their administrator simply browse to customized login pages on any web-connected computer. The service scales easily to accommodate growing user bases and storage needs while drastically reducing maintenance costs.

Google will provide organizations with two choices of service.

-- A standard edition of Google Apps for Your Domain is available today as a beta product without cost to domain administrators or end users. Key features include 2 gigabytes of email storage for each user, easy to use customization tools, and help for administrators via email or an online help center. Furthermore, organizations that sign up during the beta period will not ever have to pay for users accepted during that period (provided Google continues to offer the service).

-- A premium version of the product is being developed for organizations with more advanced needs. More information, including details on pricing, will be available soon.

"Organizations of all sizes face a common challenge of helping their users communicate and share information more effectively," said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager, enterprise, at Google. "A hosted service like Google Apps for Your Domain eliminates many of the expenses and hassles of maintaining a communications infrastructure, which is welcome relief for many small business owners and IT staffers. Organizations can let Google be the experts in delivering high quality email, messaging, and other web-based services while they focus on the needs of their users and their day-to-day business."

As a hosted service, Google Apps for Your Domain is available worldwide, though the control panel for domain administrators is currently available only in US-English. Google is currently working to make the service available to administrators in additional languages. (Individual products offered through the Google Apps for Your Domain service, such as Gmail and Google Talk, are already available in a variety of languages for end users.) Domain administrators and IT managers can visit www.google.com/a to learn more and to register for the product.

The Booq "Python XL" Laptop Backpack

A short time ago, A good friend of mine did a great review on the Boog Python XL backpack.  I thought it was a terrific review and it needed a wider audience to see it.  So with his permission, I have posted it here for all to see.  If you are looking for a new "tote", then this backpack should be a strong consideration.

    Boog Python XL

    By David Matson (aka Elrendhel)
    August 27, 2006

    Developer/Vender: Booq LLC
    Price: $219.00 -$279.00

Booq offers a Premium Quality Backpack for Larger Laptops!

    Introduction
I recently decided to purchase a new laptop system in order to keep up with my work load. I was focusing on purchasing a larger 17” system, and it was evident to me that any laptop that I intended to buy would not fit into my existing laptop bag. So before my purchase, I began shopping around for a laptop bag that would perfectly fit my new laptop.

Unfortunately, there are decidedly fewer laptop carrier bags or cases that are specifically designed for the newer 17” laptop form factor, and even fewer again if your system is of a “widescreen” variety.

Some basic research indicated that while you could certainly drop a fair amount of money (anywhere from $50 to $300) into any number of premium bags for a laptop, the bulk of them had no justifiable reason to be labeled premium: the product quality did not seem top-notch; warranties were very limited or non-existent; flimsy or questionable construction; color/design (aesthetics) were all wrong for my personality, etc.

While I did find a few premium carriers that would fit my 17” widescreen laptop, the list was small. However, I was able to narrow my search down to one product rather quickly, because only one product manufacturer made a carrier that fit all of my needs:

1.) Premium quality: I wanted a backpack that would last, and had an excellent warranty to back it up!

2.) Form Factor: For my personal needs, a backpack format would work best. I needed one that was compact in size, yet full of pockets for storage!

3.) Aesthetic quality: The backpack needed to do it’s job right, but it also needed to look good doing it!

    Overview
Enter the Python XL by Booq, which met all of my initial requirements right off the top!

The backpack is available for sale by itself, or as the major component in a “system” package, which also includes an additional sleeve (that you insert your laptop into prior to insertion into the backpack), as well as an Anaconda 5 accessory case for your iPAQ or cell phone.

I do not intend to be hard enough on my backpack (and the laptop inside) to warrant the use of a second layer of padding for the laptop. Additionally, I don’t relish the idea of removing my laptop from two different enclosures when I need it, so I decided to pass on the “system” version of the Python XL, opting instead for the Python XL backpack by itself.

    Product Claims

There are two choices for the user; either buy the Python XL by itself, or as part of a package deal called a “System”:

Python XL alone: “New! Large-capacity laptop backpack for your 17" MacBook Pro, PowerBook, or PC laptop. Rugged, large-scale performance and virtually unlimited storage options come standard.”

Python XL [System]: “The System includes the Python XL, a sleeve of choice, and the new Anaconda 5 accessory case. The complete large-capacity laptop backpack solution for your 17" MacBook Pro, PowerBook, or PC laptop. Rugged, large-scale performance and virtually unlimited storage options come standard.”

    Premium Quality:

The Python series is made from only the highest grade materials, a claim that is readily confirmed when you pick up the bag and see it’s solid construction, and feel the ruggedness of it’s rigid frame construction. Weighing-in at 5.4 lbs, it’s not light, but the extra padding and extra material used for all those extra pockets is well worth the extra weight.

Here are just a few of my observations on the quality of this product.

    • The basic fabric is a weather-resistant ballistic nylon, which is probably the best single indicator that this product is going to last a very long time.
    • Booq utilizes double-stitching in high-stress areas to ensure durability.
    • The Zippers tracks are all covered by a fine nylon weave that effectively makes the zippers water-proof. It’s amazing how well the seams of this weave close-up behind the zipper to ensure the zipper is as water-proof as possible!
    • The zipper pulls themselves are heavy-duty, customized with the Booq logo, and are thicker than the industry norm, which makes holding and pulling the zipper easier.
    • The straps are made of seatbelt quality nylon, and the ends are rolled, heat-treated, and double stitched to prevent fraying. Other bags that I’ve checked out had straps that were only heat treated on the ends, but Booq’s process allows their backpack to stay well ahead of the competition!
    • Booq offers a 100% Price Guarantee, a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, and a Limited LifeTime Warranty on the product. Put simply, you are guaranteed the best possible online price when you buy direct from Booq, complete satisfaction on the product or your money back, and a guaranteed repair or replacement of the product if it is found to be defective (very rare, so they treat each case individually!).

I would agree that this is an extremely fair set of policies, based on the main fact that the high-quality of their product design, materials, and construction greatly reduces the likelihood of a defect in workmanship occurring in the first place. Booq rarely gets a return, so of course they want to hear about it if you actually find a defect!

    A Few Words on Pockets!

One of the first things I observed about this backpack was the sheer number of pockets that it contains. I’m a very tech-oriented guy, with a lot of gadgets, but I actually ran out of stuff to put in this bag!!

    Main Laptop pocket:

The Main Laptop pocket measures approximately 17” high, by 12.25” wide, by 2” deep, which is more than sufficient room to house most any 17” laptop (widescreen format or a regular 17” format).

This pocket has a rigid inner framing that allows the bag to maintain a straight appearance, even when the pack is fully loaded.

The siding of this special pocket is lined with a scratch-resistant fabric in order to provide your laptop with the best possible care it can get.

The padding that provides the buffer-zone and safe harbor for your valuable laptop is approximately half an inch on each side, top, and bottom of this pocket.

This padding is visible in the screen shot to the right, just to the right of the laptop. The front and back of the laptop compartment is also protected by almost a half-inch of padding.

    Main User pocket:

This pocket is a little bigger, measuring in at 17” high, about 14” wide, and about 3” deep.

The Back Flap Interior: On the inside of the back flap alone, there are two pencil pockets (2” by 6”) with fold down flaps that Velcro shut, a mesh net towards the bottom (6” high by 8” across the lip), a quick-release holder for keys, and a pocket with additional scratch resistant fabric, perfect for your more fragile equipment. This back flap is anchored to the sides of the backpack by a fan-fold, which adds to the stability of the backpack, and assures that the hinge-point of the flap will not absorb all of the stress that a typical hinge receives. On the exterior of this flap is a quick access zipper to the top contents of the main user pocket, as well as two side pockets with curved zipper openings, about 12” high and about 5” wide.

The Main User Pocket Interior: On the interior of the main user pocket, there are two side-by-side expandable pockets (the left 5” across by 6.5” high, the right pocket is 6.5” across by 8” high) with fold-down flaps that Velcro shut, and a larger expandable pocket below that measures approximately 11” across and about 8.5” high, also with a fold-down flap that Velcro shut. Behind this larger covered pocket is an open pocket, which measures 14” across and about 10” high.

    Exterior Pockets:
On the outside of the backpack (in the padded back of the backpack) there is a single zippered pocket, which opens on the left-side of the pack as you face it, and measures 11” high by 12” wide, and is well suited to holding paperwork or other documentation. The zipper is tucked into the padding of the backpack so that the zipper is not felt while being worn.

On the sides of the backpack there is a cable storage enclosure (one on each side of the backpack), each measuring 12” high by 5” wide by 2” deep, and are zipper-sealed along the perimeter. On the exterior of each enclosure is an open sleeve pocket that is 8” high by 5” wide.

    Introducing, the ECTO!

I have saved the best for last. The ECTO is a removable bag that attaches to the back of the backpack by way of two quick-release clips. This bag unzips along it’s perimeter, and unfolds open like a clamshell. On one side there are two padded pockets, one a 3” by 8” covered pocket (with Velcro shut), the other a 2” by 8” covered pocket (also with Velcro shut), as well as an uncovered pocket 8” by 8”.

The other side contains three open access pockets stacked on top of each other (such that one full pocket will make it harder to fill the remaining two pockets), as well three pencil slots.

The exterior of the Ecto has a zippered pocket in the front, which measures 8” across and 8” high, and contains extra padding. There is another pocket on the back which is also padded, but does not have a zipper, and closes securely by way of a Velcro latch.

The Ecto also comes with a removable shoulder strap, in case you prefer to carry the Ecto by itself.

But how well does it fit?

The Booq website warns that the backpack might not be for everyone, and I can understand this from the aspect that its unloaded weight is about 5.4 lbs, and that it is a rather large backpack. However, I found the backpack to be perfectly sized, considering that it’s job is to hold a 17” widescreen laptop. I felt that the designers did a wonderful job utilizing the existing footprint by providing as many pockets and extras as they could.

The backpack fits well on my right shoulder for short distance travel (from the house to the car), and across both shoulders for longer distance travel (a ten minute walk from work to a restuarant for lunch, as well as a two hour geo-cache hike). The weight of the Backpack itself was not really a consideration for me, since the stuff I carried in the backpack far outweighed the backpack itself. The shoulder straps were well-padded and felt very comfortable, even on the longer distance journeys. The rigid construction of the backpack, in addition to the padding between the wearer and the laptop compartment did a wonderful job of distributing the overall weight of the backpack across my back, so that I was not fatigued prematurely.

Of course, for extra short trips, there is a padded hand-hold for carrying your backpack like a book bag. I found this handle very comfortable for short distance moves, or for just turning the bag around.

    Aesthetic Quality
I really enjoy owning a backpack that fits my style and compliments my personality. Booq’s use of a single color (jet black) throughout the entire design works well for me, as I have never liked multicolor or multi-tone color systems. A single color allows your eyes to wander along whatever lines that catch your eye. I should mention that the booq logo is orange and does tend to attract attention, but I found it entirely easy to ignore this attention-getter after only a short time. I like the fact that from a distance, the backpack looks like any other. But up close and personal, you start to see the design elements that make this backpack totally unique. And it’s only when you open it up that you start to feel a sincere appreciation for all the time the Booq engineers spent designing this backpack.

In fact, I received several compliments from friends and co-workers over the ingenuity of the design, and several more over the quality of the materials used in making the product. All were interested in watching me open the backup and show-off all the pockets that I had managed to utilize, and most were quite surprised when they saw how many pockets were available, even after I had utilized as many as possible.

    A word on Security

There is also a down-side to having a cool looking premium product, and that would be the obvious prospect of theft. One of my bigger considerations with regards to laptop security is that if you intend to buy a case for a laptop, it should not necessarily LOOK like it’s holding a valuable laptop inside it. Less than two of ten seasoned IT friends and coworkers that I spoke to about this bag even suspected that it contained my $1500 laptop. None suspected that it also contained my cell phone and iPAQ PDA.

This helped to reassure me that an average person would be less likely to recognize the bag’s true purpose. Having a laptop carrier that does not look like a laptop carrier is an excellent way to help ensure the security of your property. Of course this only helps ensure the security of your devices, it does not guarantee their security. There is no substitute for using common sense, and maintaining a security-based mindset.

    Conclusion

This backpack is an incredible product, one that has managed to earn a perfect 5 out of 5, in my humble opinion. The quality is absolutely first rate, and the price, while higher than average, is certainly understandable for such a premium quality product. The number of pockets provides even the most battle-hardened road warrior with plenty of options.

For those users who only need a laptop bag for a 15” or smaller Laptop, but prefer the benefits of the Python Series, Booq also sells the smaller Python XM, which has as many pockets as the XL, lacks the Ecto bag, and costs a bit less at $189 (or $239 for the System).

    · Premium Quality construction using 1680D ballistic nylon.

    · Large number of pockets will suit most needs.

    · The ECTO is removable and has its own shoulder strap.

    · Rigid Frame construction ensures less stress is placed on the laptop.

    · Most pockets are closable by way of a Velcro latch.

    · Some pockets were designed with extra neoprene padding for sensitive equipment.

    · All Zippers are water proof.

    · The overall Ruggedness of the product is first rate!

    · If you buy the System, the included sleeve doubles the laptop padding.

    · If you buy the System, the included Anaconda-5 will protect the average-sized cell phone or iPOD, but is not quite wide enough to shelter a PDA cell phone.

    CONs

    · Price may be high for some consumers, but the premium quality is worth it!

    · The Booq website itself warns that “the Python XL might not be for everyone”. The manufacturer wants the potential buyer to understand that this is a large backpack, it has to be in order to carry a 17” laptop. However, I found the size issue to be a moot point, and found the backpack itself to be perfectly manageable.

    The Specifics

OnTheRun with Tablet PCs - Show #27

The “boys” are back and they are terrific! Another 1st class show covering a myriad of topics. Kudos to HP warranty service, James had to return to using his 5” Sony on a short-term basis, as well as a theoretical discussion on the ability to tether Palm Treos to Tablets (which of course none of us would ever do).

You can find show #27 here.

    I Love My XM

.....and I got GREAT news today from Engadget!

FCC approves three XM radios, production to resume shortly

XM lovers rejoice! The FCC has finally determined that three XM radios with FM transmitters are in the clear. XM had to cease production back in late May to give time to the Feds to check out its products.

I have been waiting to upgrade to a new XM Radio and with this announcement, I now know I'll be getting my new XM Radio soon....so now the question is....which one?  Ah...I already know which one I want...I think!

Want To Speed Up Your Mobile Web Surfing?

Well if you do then Ed Hardy has a few tips for you.

In part,Ed had the following to say:

No matter what type of mobile device you have, there's a fairly simple step you can take that will have a noticeable effect on how quickly web pages load -- at least for some people. All you have to do is change the DNS server your web browser is using.

This only takes a moment, and can decrease the time it takes many devices to start loading all web pages.

You can read Ed's article here

    It's not news....

    impressed? Well, I guess so...

Zune is coming soon or at least that's the speculation since the filing appeared at the FCC site. Frankly, I'm just not impressed with the look but the features - they look very promising.

The ability to send streaming music content to four other devices is very cool. The device will support both the 802.11b and 802.11g wireless standards and will have a 30GB hard drive, a 3-inch screen and an FM tuner, along with a USB 2.0 connection to synchronize with a PC .... impressive!

    It's not our fault....

...then who's fault is it then? That was my question today to my provider from around 9am to around 3pm. Server maintenance...it will be an hour. Oh, we are dealing with another company that services the internet. It's an internet issue....and on and on and on.

So I would go outside and look over the fence at my neighbor working diligently out in his yard. I finally gave up and went out in the yard to do some much needed work.

So, there was nothing done today...sorry about that. I'll try to make up for it with some good stuff later on.

It keeps growing and growing and growing....

FREE public WI-Fi access keeps growing and growing and growing....I like that and it is the right thing to do so everyone can have access at anytime no matter where they are. It is slowly spreading across the country and I would expect that we will soon see it everywhere.

An example is Occoquan, Virginia, a historic town located in Prince William County. The Town of Occoquan is introducing a new public Wi-Fi network built by World Airwaves and SkyPilot.

A new Mayor and Town Council are attracting new visitors with free Wi-Fi for this riverside town. Their hope is to promote growth and yet preserve the charm of the community.

Mayor Porta said: "The convenience of public wireless broadband access is yet one more reason for people to visit Occoquan. And once they experience our blend of shops, restaurants, local history, and other services, I am confident they will want to return again and again."

When I travel, the first thing I look for in booking a hotel is internet access. I won't have to think about it when I return to Virginia and visit Occoquan! Congratulations to the folks in Occoquan!

    Mini Stereo Speakers for DAP

The only problem with an iPOD or any MP3 player for that matter is that you need to have a means of listening to them.  Most folks use a headset, others use a desktop plug in speaker system and many use both.  But what do you do when you are "on the road" and just don't want a headset stuck in your ear?

Akihabara news had a "neatsy" set of speakers for your iPOD that you might want to check out.

Link to Akihabara News - Mini Stereo Speakers for DAP

Yeah, but can you whittle a stick with it?

For me, Experiencing Mobility is experiencing the outdoors.  I enjoy being outside experiencing the wonders of nature and somehow I try to combine all my technology with it.  You always find me with a PDA in one pocket and a knife in another.  Well, it appears as if Wenger, makers of the Swiss Army Knife, wants us to throw away all of our knives and miscellaneous contraptions we might carry as we Experience Mobility.

They have introduced a huge Swiss Army knife, which includes every tool the company makes. Wenger is calling the contraption “Giant Knife Version 1.0.” It debuted with all 85 features and can perform hundreds of functions but this version does NOT include a PDA.

    Check it out....

    Logitech Reinvents the Wheel

We spend a lot of time using a mouse and surprisingly a recent  study revealed that people spin their mouse's scroll wheel approximately 26 feet in an eight-hour day. I've been wondering why I've been experiencing a little pain in my forearm.

Logitech just might have a cure to ease the pain and they definitely have a new mouse that will greatly enhance my ability to Experience Mobility.  Today, they introduced two advanced mice that transform the experience of finding and manipulating the vast amount of digital content on a person's computer or on the Web.

    From Logitech:

Both mice feature hyper-fast scrolling with a revolutionary alloy wheel -- the MicroGear(TM) Precision Scroll Wheel -- that spins freely for up to seven seconds, spanning hundreds of pages with a single flick of the finger and setting a new benchmark in scrolling efficiency. Computer navigation with these mice is also enhanced with an innovative One-Touch(TM) Search feature that allows people to select a word or phrase on a Web page or in a document and, with a single click, view Internet search results on that subject. And with their ergonomic designs, the new mice offer a level of comfort that is almost forgettable -- they become a nearly imperceptible extension of the hand.

TV Guide Mobile Entertainment And 4INFO Partner To Bring TV Listings To Cell Phones

Cell Phone Users Can Search for Favorite Programs, Channels and Local Listings While On-the-Go

TV Guide Mobile Entertainment, Inc. and 4INFO, Inc. announced today that they have partnered to bring TV listings direct to cell phones. Resulting from this partnership and available immediately, cell phone users will now have the ability to quickly search for channel listings, specific television programming listings, and time-based programming from any mobile phone via SMS or WAP. The service is available to all mobile phone users regardless of carrier, and will allow TV fans to easily locate air dates, times, and channels for their favorite programming while out of town, or just on the go.

"At TV Guide, we understand just how passionate fans are about their television shows," said Rich Cusick, senior vice president and general manager, Digital Media, Gemstar-TV Guide International. "With this new listings offering, TV Guide and 4INFO are providing consumers unprecedented ease of access to the information they want and need about their favorite shows, wherever and whenever. 4INFO is revolutionizing the feature set available to cell phone users and is an ideal partner to help extend the reach of the TV Guide brand in the increasingly popular wireless content market."

"We are delighted to partner with TV Guide and deliver their content over our powerful and intuitive mobile search platform," stated Zaw Thet, CEO of 4INFO, Inc. "With over 200 million mobile phone users in the market, and 98 percent of the US watching television, there is a growing demand for entertainment-driven information while on the go. While bringing an interactive search service to viewers, we also create a new advertising medium for show promotion and targeted relationship marketing."

The TV Guide mobile product allows viewers to look up television channels and show times based on regional or local service providers. The reply to an initial query uses 4INFO's menu-based system to help a user select from a list of television service providers generated by the initial stated location. This location is then used as a default for subsequent searches. Once a provider has been selected, program matches are returned with airdate and channel. Specific programs can be searched further to locate future airdates. For channel searches, the local channel number is displayed for a given call sign and location.

Viewers can send a text message to 4INFO (44636) or search on 4INFO's WAP site (http://wap.4INFO.net) by using the "tv" indicator and the following syntax:

For television show time and channel information, use:
    - "tv" + SHOW + LOCATION (city or Zip)
    - Example query: "tv project runway 94107"
    - Example result:
    Project Runway
    08/12,1:30AM BRAVO 48
    08/12,2:30AM BRAVO 48
    08/12,3:30AM BRAVO 48
    08/12,4PM BRAVO 48
    08/12,5PM BRAVO 48
To identify a channel number for a particular network, use:
    - "tv" + NETWORK SIGN + LOCATION (city or Zip)
    - Example query: "tv cbs 94107"
    - Example result:
    Comcast Cable:
    KPIX 5
    KPIX-DT 705
Direct Digital St. Francis Place-San Fra:
    KPIX 5

Gizmodo sometimes finds the "coolest" items

Check this out....and I was looking to replace my portable barbeque....hmmm, maybe I can adapt my new Motion LS800 as I try to Experience Mobility.

    USB Powered BBQ ... Wtf?

This is one hell of a mod. Using 30 USB ports spread out over five USB PCI cards, this barbeque was created. The PC is still functional, too.

It looks like they are cooking a piece of shaved steak....might take a long time to cook enough for a sandwich.  Anyway, click on the link and you can see a video of it actually working!

    The Onyx Concept

You need to check this out...this is very very slick!

Synaptics, in partnership with industrial design studio Pilotfish, collaborated in the design of the next-generation phone concept, Onyx. Enabled through Synaptics clear, capacitive sensing technology, Onyx illustrates the future of mobile communications by combining an intelligent and adaptive user interface with sleek industrial design and next-generation user interaction design.

    Why Onyx?

The focus of the Onyx project was to illustrate how Synaptics' revolutionary clear capacitive touch screen can push design and interaction boundaries through collaborative design. By combining Synaptics enabling technology, interaction design proficiency and concept prototyping capabilities with Pilotfish's user interface and industrial design expertise, the Onyx concept illustrates what is possible when a thoughtful approach is used to incorporate new technology in the mobile environment.

    Interaction Design

The Onyx concept acts as a remote for your life. And because life is activity based, not application based, the concept illustrates how applications such as phone, GPS, music, teleconference and calendar events can work simultaneously. The Onyx concept does not base its experience on treating applications as separate windows or entities that work in isolation. Rather, the Onyx concept seamlessly integrates functions into activity based experiences.

    Synaptics Capacitive Sensing

The Onyx concept is enabled through Synaptics ClearPad technology, a new capability under development within Synaptics. ClearPad is a thin, high resolution capacitive touch screen that can be placed over any viewable surface for finger input. ClearPad enables a dynamic and adaptive user interface that eliminates the need for mechanical buttons on handheld devices. This allows mobile designers to increase LCD size to support the content and functionality available for todays handheld devices. Additionally, because ClearPad is solid state, it can be curved and mounted beneath plastics, offering mobile designers an opportunity to create sleek and stylized industrial designs.

ClearPad is based on Synaptics' proprietary sensing technology, and will offer unique capabilities such as two finger input, proximity sensing, text entry and high resolution finger input that can dramatically improve and enhance the user experience with a touch screen.

    Where can I get Onyx?

The Onyx concept is purely a concept platform designed to encourage discussion within the mobile community. Onyx will not be launched by Synaptics or any mobile phone OEMs. The enabling capacitive ClearPad technology is expected to be productized and available to OEMs by the end of the year.

Motorola Q - an easier input method

Chris over at MobilitySite has posted a nice review on the Motorola Q.  Take a minute to see what his thoughts were on this "hot" device.  In part, he had the following to say:

The Q was to bring something the equation that the others were lacking for my taste, an easier input method. The Motorola Q has a keyboard and should eliminate one of my biggest complaints about the Smartphones, T9 input.

Save on Gas and Avoid Traffic

With record prices at the pump and the promise of more traffic on the roads as summer vacations come to an end, Verizon Wireless is highlighting several mobile services that help workers commute more efficiently during their morning and evening drives.

Services such as VZ Navigator(SM), FuelFinder and TXT Traffic Alerts can help customers locate an unfamiliar destination, a nearby gas station with the best prices and avoid traffic congestion while on the road. For workers with flexible work arrangements who can avoid traffic and expensive fuel costs altogether by telecommuting, BroadbandAccess from Verizon Wireless securely connects to the Internet at broadband speeds, providing a convenient way to conduct business from the comfort of their homes, in coffee shops, at airports, and allows true mobility, rather than having to find a single "spot."

With more traffic on the roads and the rising cost of fuel, commuters want services that can help them get the most out of a tank of gas. Services like VZ Navigator, FuelFinder and TXT Traffic Alerts from Verizon Wireless can help our customers make their commutes more efficient.

    VZ Navigator
VZ Navigator uses Location Based Services (LBS), including mapping, audible turn-by-turn navigation and the ability to find over 14 million points of interest (like ATMs, restaurants and gas stations) so customers can find their way to meetings at new destinations quickly and easily. With VZ Navigator, customers see a map of their current location, with directions leading to a selected address, and hear turn-by-turn navigation with audible voice directions to any location in the U.S. VZ Navigator functions as an advanced navigation system on a wireless phone, but only costs a fraction of the price of vehicle-installed GPS devices and systems -- perfect for customers who are constantly on-the-go.

VZ Navigator is available in the getGOING shopping aisle of the Get It Now® virtual store for $9.99 for unlimited monthly access or $2.99 for 24- hour use. Through September 19, customers can download a free 30-day trial of VZ Navigator on select Get It Now-enabled phones. Download charges for Get It Now applications vary and airtime charges apply when browsing, downloading and using certain applications. Customers need a Get It Now-enabled handset and Verizon Wireless digital service to access the Get It Now virtual store.

    FuelFinder
Verizon Wireless customers can use their mobile phones to find the best price for gas -- even before putting keys into the ignition. FuelFinder enables Verizon Wireless customers with Mobile Web 2.0(SM)-capable phones to search for the best deal on fuel by ZIP code, city or recent search, with regular updates on over 110,000 stations from coast to coast as often as every two hours. In addition, Verizon Wireless customers can view an interactive color map on their phones that plots out FuelFinder's results and provides turn-by-turn directions to any selected gas station. FuelFinder is available on Mobile Web 2.0-capable phones for $1.99 monthly access. Mobile Web 2.0 is available for $5.00 monthly access, plus airtime and can be self-provisioned, eliminating the need for Verizon Wireless customers to call customer service or visit a Verizon Wireless Communication Store to sign up for the service. Customers simply register for Mobile Web 2.0 on their Mobile Web-capable handset and gain access to information and content right from their wireless handsets.

    TXT Traffic Alert Service
Commuters using the Verizon Wireless TXT Traffic Alert Service can choose their preferred routes and designate which times of the day they would like to receive traffic update alerts, while saving time, fuel costs and overall frustration while staying informed of changing traffic information. Customers can register for TXT Traffic Alerts by visiting www.vtext.com, Verizon Wireless' TXT Messaging companion Web site, and selecting which traffic alerts they wish to receive. There is no charge to set up alerts, but standard TXT Messaging rates apply for TXT Traffic Alerts received.

    BroadbandAccess and BroadbandAccess Connect
Verizon Wireless' nationally recognized BroadbandAccess service allows customers to connect wirelessly to the Internet, their corporate intranet and e-mail at broadband speeds while away from the office, making it a great option for commuters that want to avoid the road and work remotely. Available for use with a PC Card or with select wireless phones when used as a modem, BroadbandAccess is rapidly becoming the standard for wireless connectivity in the business world and offers another option for customers who view office mobility and speed as a competitive advantage for their business. BroadbandAccess delivers average connection speeds of 400 to 700 kilobits per second, helping customers stay in touch with co-workers, customers and business partners and is available for use with several PC Cards.
BroadbandAccess Connect delivers the same speeds as Verizon Wireless' award-winning BroadbandAccess service, but uses a simple cable connection from a wireless phone to a laptop, providing a cost-effective solution for customers who do not want to purchase a separate PC card to access the Internet from their laptop.

Customers with any monthly Verizon Wireless voice plan can receive unlimited BroadbandAccess for Internet browsing, e-mail and intranet access for an additional $59.99 monthly access. For non-voice customers, BroadbandAccess is available for $79.99 monthly access for unlimited use for Internet browsing, e-mail and intranet access.
Customers with BroadbandAccess Connect-capable phones select from three BroadbandAccess Connect pricing options:

  • Customers with a select Verizon Wireless BlackBerry, PDA or smartphone and an unlimited data plan with qualifying voice plan can get unlimited BroadbandAccess Connect for $15.00 monthly access.
  • Customers with a select Verizon Wireless BlackBerry, PDA or smartphone can get BroadbandAccess Connect with an unlimited data plan for $30 monthly access.
  • Customers with select wireless phones from Verizon Wireless, such as The V and VX8100 from LG or the RAZR V3c and E815 from Motorola, and eligible voice plan can get unlimited BroadbandAccess Connect for $59.99 monthly access. To use the phone as a modem, customers must have a separately purchased Mobile Office Kit, which is available for $39.99.
Services available on certain phones and devices and within specific coverage areas; for more information about Verizon Wireless products and services, visit a Verizon Wireless Communications Store, call 1-800-2 JOIN IN or go to www.verizonwireless.com.

    Vista incentives before January

Stan Beer is reporting that Microsoft is ready to go with Vista incentives before January.  In part, Stan said:

Two things are clear about the impending release of Windows Vista. One is that come hell or high water Microsoft intends to get the new operating system out the door in January 2007. The second is that Microsoft will be pulling out all stops to get Vista on desktops in January by offering free or at least heavily discounted upgrades to 2006 holiday season buyers.

BugMe! Mobile for Microsoft Windows Mobile

Electric Pocket Limited released a new version of its legendary BugMe! for users of handheld devices based on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile Pocket PC platform.

BugMe! Mobile version 5.0 supports Windows Mobile 5.0, the latest version of the Pocket PC operating system, and leverages the capabilities of the newer models such as Palm Inc.’s Treo 700w, to provide users with more options for capturing and sharing notes, sketches and screen captures.

BugMe!, which is nearing its 10-year anniversary as the top note-taking and alarm application for mobile devices, has been updated significantly in this latest release. One of the most notable new features is the ability for users to use the photo picker feature and camera of Windows Mobile 5 devices to capture “screen shots” off their handheld, insert a handwritten or typed note onto the image, and then email the image to friends, family or co-workers.

“It is now extremely simple to snap a quick picture with your PDA’s camera, jot a note on it, and email it off to those who need a quick visual image to get the point you want to make,” said Iain Barclay, Electric Pocket’s co-founder and chief products officer.
Jotting quick notes and messaging them to friends electronically is one of the hottest trends in mobile technology, and BugMe! Mobile adds a visual element to mobile messaging by enabling users to quickly transmit notes, sketches and pictures via Multi-Media Messaging Service (MMS).
When a short text message isn’t as effective as a picture or sketch, BugMe! Mobile makes electronic messaging much more effective and powerful—and fun to use.

    About BugMe!
BugMe! has been one of the most widely downloaded applications for handheld computers since it was first released in 1997. With BugMe!, handheld computer users can take notes and capture information without having to learn the special characters used in handheld devices. Because BugMe! is so practical and easy to use, it is often cited as one of the most essential third-party applications for handhelds.
    BugMe! Mobile retails for $19.95.

    Belkin WiFi Skype Phone Review

Gizmodo has scored a nice Belkin WiFi phone and shares their review! Check it out.

The Belkin Skype WiFi phone is a phone that looks like your cell, but works only with Skype and only over WiFi. It's about the same size as a larger candybar style phone...maybe 125% as long, wide, and thick as a Sony Ericsson T610. We got our hands on one and ran it through our testing process to see if it lived up to its Skype hype.

    Logitech ChillStream Controller

Keeping Gamers' Hands Cool and Dry

Logitech today unveiled a new game controller with an innovative built-in fan-based cooling system, designed to keep the hands of gamers cool and dry -- even during intense competition. The Logitech(R) ChillStream(TM) controller for PC is the only new game controller to offer this exclusive, patented technology.

"We're always evaluating the different kinds of materials and technologies that can help make the gaming experience more comfortable," said Ruben Mookerjee, Logitech's director of product marketing for gaming. "But for intense action-games, there is nothing that can substitute for moving air -- it's the best way to keep hands cool and dry. This new controller offers Logitech's unique ChillStream hand-cooling technology without compromising on the size and design of the controller. And the fan is extremely quiet -- you'll know it's on only because you can feel the air cooling your hands."

    Logitech ChillStream Technology

Logitech's exclusive ChillStream Technology includes a built-in 40 mm fan that circulates up to 3.41 cubic feet of air every minute, while generating very little noise. Because of the fan's compact size, Logitech can deliver the ChillStream feature in a standard-size controller. Three narrow vents on each side of the controller push air directly onto the four fingers, the base of the thumb and the palm of the hand -- the three areas of the hand that need cooling most. The air stream has three settings -- high, low, and off. The air vents are recessed from the surface of the controller and rubber linings surrounding the vents are flush with the surface -- making the vents barely noticeable to the touch during gaming.

    Logitech ChillStream controller for PC

The plug-and-play, full-speed USB Logitech ChillStream controller for PC works on Windows(R) XP computers (with the latest service pack), and will work with Windows(R) Vista(TM) when Microsoft's new operating system becomes available. The controller's stylish silver-and-black color scheme is accented by the metal grille covering the air intake at the base of the controller. The controller features Logitech's patented floating D-pad, which uses four points of contact instead of a single pivot point -- a design that resists side-to-side tipping inherent in other controllers, making the controller more precise. The controller's analog stick has been machine-tested to perform at least one million circular revolutions, ensuring that it can handle the rigors of gaming over a long period of time. The Logitech ChillStream controller for PC will be available in the U.S. and in Europe, beginning in September. It has a suggested retail price of $39.99 in the U.S.

    Samsung Launches a New Q1

The original Q1 did not seem to make it big so it looks as if they are going to try a new tactic...NO MOVING PARTS. That means the hard drive is gone in favor of a 32GB SSD. Not a bad idea....this could possibly add some new life into the Q1 but even though your data is going to be much more secure, will your pocketbook be empty?

There are three important factors if this change is to be successful...COST...COST...COST! I believe that if they want to "grab the market" they need to "grab the customers" with a price they just can't say no to. What do you think?

    SanDisk unveils new music player

Hold Off That Holiday Shopping A Bit! The price wars will be here soon!

Reuters reported today that Sandisk introduced a new digital music player that can store twice as many songs as Apple Inc.'s popular iPod Nano and cut prices on its existing models ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The new Sansa player has 8 gigabytes of storage...that is up to 2,000 songs. Plenty for me! The cost is expected to be about $250. Other Sansa players in the lineup will have price cuts by as much as 30 percent.....watch what happens now!

New US Passports Contain Secure Identification Chips

Advanced Technology Meets International Standard for Secure Travel Documents

Infineon Technologies AG announced that it received a multi-million piece purchase order from the United States government to supply its highly-secure integrated circuit technology for the new electronic passport. Designed to facilitate international travel by allowing automatic identity verification, faster immigration inspections and greater border protection and security, the new passports include a computer chip in the back cover that securely stores the same information that is printed on the document.

The US began issuing electronic passports to diplomats and other government workers in late 2005, and is now expanding the program to include the widely issued tourist passport used by private citizens. By the end of this year, the government expects that all new US passports will be issued as electronic passports.

Do you want some interesting tidbits?

If you do, then you can always find some very interesting items at the Windows Mobile Team Blog. All sorts of helpful tips are there to help your experience be just that much better.

There was a recent entry that I found interesting on Power to the Pocket PC. In part, Mike Calligaro had the following to say:
Touch: It’s not all that electric

The touch screen itself isn’t a very large drain on power. It’s similar to a button. When it’s not being pressed, it burns almost no power. When it is being pressed, it burns some, but not very much. There are much bigger fish to fry than the touch screen.

The touch screen’s big claim to fame when it comes to battery life is that it can cause other big power drainers to run. For instance, if you leave your PocketPC on and put it in your pocket, your pocket might touch the screen and cause the backlight to turn on. As you know from the previous article, turning on the backlight is huge.

Most people suspend their PocketPCs before putting them away, but you also run the risk of having the device wake up in your pocket for a meeting reminder or something, and then not turning off because the screen is being touched. The Treo 700w has a killer solution to this problem in the form of a screen lock. AKU2 devices also have a screen lock, though they’re not as good as the Treo’s. From both a battery life standpoint as well as a “hey, how did this contact get changed?” one, it’s generally a good idea to lock the screen.

User Agent String Utility version 2

Whenever Internet Explorer releases a new major version, Microsoft makes every attempt to coordinate the change with major web site owners so that users who upgrade to the latest version can take advantage of new features available on the upgraded browsing platform.

A character string called the “User Agent String” identifies the major version of the browser to web sites so that the sites can offer certain functionality on particular browser versions. In some cases, websites might misidentify a new version of IE as an outdated version, with results ranging from rendering and behavior issues to total rejection of the user. This utility changes cerregistry keys on an IE 7.0 installation to allow a user to mimic an IE 6.0 installation as a simple workaround until problematic sites update their code. It also offers users the option to report these problematic sites to Microsoft.

    Boeing To Phase Out Connexion

I remember when Connexion was first announced and I remember thinking it was a great way for the traveler to Experience Mobility. Sadly, Boeing will be phasing out Connexion....it just has not made it into the profit column. The service allowed travelers with mobile phones to make and receive calls as well as have Internet access and limited channels of live TV.

I guess the price was a little steep ($26.95 for entire flight, including connecting flights within 24 hours of signing in or 1 hour $9.95, 2 hours $14.95, 3 hours $17.95) so it looks as if Connexion will fly away.

BUT...it still lives for a while so check it out if you fly on Air China, China Airlines, Japan Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, All Nippon Airways, El Al Airlines, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, Asiana Airlines, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa

TrekStor of Germany Introduces USB Stick With Eight Gigabytes Storage

    WOW...they are getting BIG!

Setting astonishing new standards for storage capacity in USB memory, TrekStor GmbH, Germany's largest maker of USB storage products, has introduced a USB stick with up to eight gigabytes of storage. Measuring about twice the width of current USB sticks, though thinner and shorter, the new TrekStor Model CS-D stick is available and shipping in six and eight gigabyte models.

This is a massive amount of storage in very tiny, very portable package," said Hana Arad, president of Data Station, the U.S. marketing arm for TrekStor. Arad said that for its size – 1.25 inches wide, 0.375 inches thick, and 2.5 inches long, including cover -- the new CS-D is among the world’s highest capacity stick storage device. "Our eight gigabyte stick weighs less than one ounce. It is a remarkable achievement," said Arad.

For durability and good looks, the TrekStor CS-D USB stick features an aluminum casing and connector cover with a brushed metal finish. Power is supplied through the USB connection; a red LED is illuminated when the stick is in use. A neck strap and USB extension cable are included. The CS-D can be plugged directly into a USB port or be connected to a USB port using the supplied cable.

"The CS-D must pass the same stringent manufacturing and quality control process as other TrekStor memory products," said Shimon Szmigiel, TrekStor CEO.

Rather than using flash memory, the CS-D employs a miniature one-inch hard drive that is shock-mounted using an original, proprietary design. The CS-D is intended for same daily use as flash-technology memory products.

Available now at Amazon.com, J&R Music World, and RCS Experience, the CS-D comes in capacities of 6GB and 8GB. The MSRP is $139.99 and $179.99 respectively, and each is backed by a one-year warranty.

    Apple - YOU ARE WRONG!

Besides the fact that I still harbor a distinct dislike for Apple because I was "screwed" years ago on a system and even though I have "softened" my feeling towards them over the years, when I see a "BIG BOY" trying to step on the "little guy", I just get my dander up!

Imagine, being a small business...probably an "out of home" one at that and you make slick covers for laptops. So you make these slick covers, call it a TightPod and get a letter from APPLE claiming the name of your product could cause confusion between your brand and the iPod.

Now growing up, you learned what a POD was...
    Main Entry: pod
    Part of Speech: noun
    Definition: vegetable case
Synonyms: capsule, case, covering, hull, husk, sheath, sheathing, shell, shuck, skin, vessel
    Source: Roget's New Millennium™ Thesaurus, First Edition (v 1.3.1)

Now trust me, if APPLE truly believes that this lady is infringing on their space, they are sick puppies. OK, so what can we do for Terry Wilson? Why not wander over to her site and pick up one of those cool little TightPods for your laptop. God knows, she will need the money to fight off the bullies at APPLE!

MobileSketch Touch Tablet was designed to empower users to quickly and easily draw sketches in the field using a Tablet PC or Ultra Mobile PC. Version 3 is designed to take full advantage of the functionality and form factor of the mobile device making it an invaluable tool to mobile professionals.

Latest Windows hole the last straw

I usually like articles that are written by Stan Beer from ITWire but I just don't agree with this one.

He ends his piece by saying:
For many Windows users who have been hacked and had their systems compromised despite their best efforts at protecting their systems, at least some must be now wondering whether it is time to consider looking into whether there is a safer alternative.
Truth be told, there is not a safer alternative. Yup, Windows does get hit and so do all the others. And as the others grow, so won't the number of hits they get. What I like is that Microsoft is continually going after the flaws...every Tuesday we get an update. Do you really think another solution would be that aggressive in giving updates...I think not!

Read Stan's article here....what do you think?

    Wireless Phone Jack Debuts

Got too many wires? Want to eliminate a few and be able to Experience Mobility a little better in your home?

If you do, then check this out...

RTX Products A/S is launching a wireless phone jack outdating phone wires, thereby enabling any phone, fax, PC modem, or set top box to go wireless.

Many would agree that it seems paradoxical to install long, unsightly and expensive phone wires in an age when practically any other device in the home is wireless. Nonetheless, many homes still have only one phone socket but several devices in need of its capacity. Every time a new telecom device (phone, all-in-one office printer with built-in fax, set top box, or VoIP ATA) is brought into the home; this requires either new phone wire installations or placing metres of wires around the house. Thus, expensive and time-consuming work, messy tangles of wires below desks, alongside walls, through ceilings, upstairs and downstairs are everyday realities in many homes. Many people seem to have settled with this situation, while others have invested large sums of money and time installing ingenious architraves to hide at least part of the wires cluttering their house. According to RTX Products, however, things do not have to be like this.

RTX has a long history and years of expertise within the development of advanced solutions for wireless communication. Notably, RTX Products is engaged in the development and production of niche products. "At the moment, we consider the Wireless PHONEJack to be a niche product, but it certainly has a broader potential because it represents the fulfilment of world-wide needs", says sales and marketing director Jens Jungersen. "The Wireless PHONEJack is truly an interesting product. Practically everybody needs more than one phone socket in their home and who wouldn't prefer these to be wireless? That was basically our background for developing the Wireless PHONEJack", Mr. Jungersen continues.

The Wireless PHONEJack has an operating range of up to 50 metres and in practice, this means that it covers all floors and rooms of the house. Easy installation is another key feature of the Wireless PHONEJack. A base unit is simply connected to the phone socket, while an extension unit is plugged into any power socket within a range of 50 metres. All without incurring any installation time or costs, as the Wireless PHONEJack offers genuine plug-and-play installation: Just plug in and communicate.

    Socket Communications Achieves RoHS Compliance

RoHS and WEEE Compliance Underscore Commitment to International Regulations for Environmental Health and Safety

Socket Communications, Inc. announced certification and compliance with the regulations of the European Union (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. The RoHS Directive, enacted into law by the countries of the EU in February 2003, restricts specific hazardous substances in an effort to address waste management problems linked to materials that are likely to pose risks to human health and the environment.

“Socket takes environmental responsibility seriously and works diligently to make sure all of our products meet global environmental standards,” said Peter Phillips, Vice President of Marketing at Socket Communications. “We have succeeded in meeting the requirements of the RoHS Directive by eliminating the use of banned substances in products sold into the EU. As similar regulations are now being adopted in other geographies around the world, Socket is now offering customers world-wide RoHS compliant products that meet their specific needs. This capability represents a key milestone for Socket in support of our global customer base.”

In order to comply with the RoHS Directive deadline of July 1, 2006, Socket put in place a sophisticated management system to ensure that customers could continue to purchase its same high-quality products while working to meet the standards. The law requires all new commercial, electrical and electronic equipment to be manufactured without hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

Additionally, Socket has been WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) compliant since August of 2005 on all products. WEEE is intended to protect the quality of the environment and human health through the prudent use of natural resources and the adoption of waste management strategies that focus on recycling and reuse. Under these laws, producers of most electrical equipment are responsible for their products at the end of their useful lives. Producer responsibility includes meeting labeling requirements, providing information to end-users and treatment facilities, ensuring the availability of collection infrastructure, submitting sales and recovery data, and financing WEEE costs.

Socket is proactive in its contribution to ensuring a clean environment by using only recyclable materials for packaging, reusing common-use materials, and is recognized by the city of Newark, California for reducing office waste destined for the landfill.

    Winners Announced!

Congratulations to the winners of The People's Choice Podcast Awards. There were some great podcasts in contention and all need to be congratulated for a job well done! It is not easy producing quality content on a consistent basis but all of them do it.

I want to thank all of you that voted for your favorite (hopefully it was the same as mine...lol). Seriously, I am glad you voted for YOUR choice and I hope all of the candidates will continue to bring us new and exciting content.

A special note to the runner ups in the Best Mobile Podcast...technically you all lost out to God, so there's no shame in that*!

Lastly, a BIG THANK YOU to the folks that run The Podcast Awards! You have done a terrific job again! I am looking forward to seeing it again next year with more content and more folks voting!

(*I can't take credit for that line, it came from my great and good friend in Canada)

    Ahh...the ultimate compliment!

Compliments come in a variety of forms. Some are out right in your face thank you's and others are behind the scenes "I won't say anything but I like what you did better". I am appreciative of both kinds of compliments...they do make you feel good.

So why do I say this tonight? Well, before I left Maine, I posted a news item on Palm's introduction of Palm's GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition. I chose not to put the Palm logo up but rather show a picture of a Palm device with all the "stuff" that comes with it. My reason was simple, it had already been posted on several sites so seeing a Palm logo AGAIN was not going to attract folks to looking at my item.

So where is the compliment...when a BIG site uses the Palm logo for their post, then visits my site and sees how I presented it and then changes their post to reflect what I did...I take that as a compliment. So, to my old friend, Thank You for the compliment!

    Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition

Palm's New GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition Uses Treo Smartphones and TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 Software to Find New Destinations

Palm Inc. announced the Palm GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition, featuring new TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software. Drivers using the new GPS Navigator with their Treo smartphones can rely on voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions to easily find their destinations as well as millions of points of interest, including gas stations, restaurants, parks, airports and more. TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 is available today exclusively for Palm's GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition.

Palm's new Bluetooth(R) enabled SiRFstarIII(TM) GPS receiver, which features a sleek design and easier-to-see LED lights, seamlessly pairs with Palm Treo 650, Treo 700w and Treo 700p smartphones. The product is simple to set up, thanks to a 1GB memory card preloaded with maps. Travelers simply pop the memory card into their Treo smartphone and pair the GPS receiver to access highway and street-level maps covering the United States and Canada. No desktop syncing or downloading of maps is required. Using the smartphone's high-resolution screen, TomTom's NAVIGATOR 6 software automatically shows the receiver's (and hence, the car's) current location.

"Smartphones are expanding the market for mobile navigation," said Jim Schwabe, general manager of accessories for Palm, Inc. "The beauty is that this powerful GPS solution is always readily available because it's part of something people are carrying anyway -- their Treo smartphone."

"The convergence of portable navigation devices is growing in the United States," said Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom. "Palm's bundle offering with TomTom's new NAVIGATOR 6 software reflects our joint efforts to continue providing customers with essential smartphone solutions. The Treo smartphone series provides an ideal platform for portable navigation."

TomTom is the leading provider of personal navigation products and services. TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software offers coast-to-coast and cross-border navigation, as well as new and enhanced options. New features include trip planning based on preferred arrival time, speed-limit information and integrated navigation to the smartphone's contact list.

    How It Works

The Bluetooth technology-enabled receiver identifies the car's position using satellites. By communicating with the GPS receiver via Bluetooth, the Treo smartphone obtains real-time location information and displays 3-D maps on the Treo smartphone's high-resolution screen. After a destination has been programmed, TomTom NAVIGATOR gives voice-guided, turn-by-turn instructions in one of more than 30 available voices. It will also automatically recalculate a route after a wrong turn, avoid roadblocks or circumvent traffic congestion.

    Pricing and Availability

At $299 (estimated U.S. street price), Palm's GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition includes a Bluetooth enabled SiRFstarIII GPS receiver, TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 software featuring the latest Tele Atlas(R) maps, a 1GB memory card with preloaded maps of the continental United States and Canada, a vehicle device cradle with windshield mount and a charging system.

The GPS Navigator from Palm is now available at Palm's online and retail stores (http://www.palm.com/us/store).

New Wi-Fi standard - delayed again!

It pays to wait! There have been a few manufacturers that have already released products claiming that they are (or will be) compliant...but the standard has been delayed...AGAIN! I indicated sometime back that there are some things I would wait on and this is definitely one that I would wait on.

Although the promise of significantly faster speeds is definitely enticing, it just does not make sense to me to do an upgrade that potentially will end up being a problem. My advice...wait...I believe that these pre-standard approved products will not be compatible with the eventual approved standard and I believe it is unlikely they will be able to be upgraded.

Dell Will Recall Batteries in PC’s

DAMON DARLIN from the NY Times wrote an interesting piece that you might want to read. In part he said:

Dell is recalling 4.1 million notebook computer batteries because they could erupt in flames, the company said yesterday. It will be the largest safety recall in the history of the consumer electronics industry, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Of course we have been reading about this for some time and I am sure the pictures that were floating around the internet had a big impact of Dell's quick decision...I'm glad I didn't have one!

    Samsung SGH-X820

Sascha Segan has written a reviw on the new Samsung SGH-X820. I think he likes it! Take a look at what Sascha had to say...you might like it too!

As the world's thinnest phone, the Samsung SGH-X820 is an amazing device: It is as good at making calls and surfing the Web as it is at turning heads. It makes the Motorola SLVR L7 look like a brick, and puts other thin phones to shame with its 2-megapixel camera and elegant, fun interface. The super-slim profile means you must forgo a memory card slot, and the battery life is on the low side for a GSM phone. The coup de grace: It's available only through independent retailers.

    Pageflakes Launches Full-Fledged RSS Reader

Pageflakes announced the release of its brand new RSS reader. The new feed aggregator lets internet users read all their favorite blogs and news more conveniently than ever before.

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and is a technology used by hundreds of thousands of blogs and other web sites to deliver so called content "feeds" to users. The user simply enters his favorite feeds or selects some popular feeds such as The New York Times, TechCrunch or Gizmodo from the feed directory. Pageflakes (www.pageflakes.com) then automatically monitors all feeds for updates and puts all articles on the user's page.

To fit everyone's taste and personal reading habit, the new RSS reader provides a variety of different views:

+ In Outlook View, the screen is split into three panes, letting users read their RSS feeds in a similar way like many users are used to read their emails.

+ Newspaper View puts all articles on one large virtual sheet of paper. By scrolling down, users can quickly navigate through the daily information overload.

+ Last but not least, the innovative Website View lets users view postings in their original context and formatting.

Additional features include an "all-feeds-in-one" option which mixes postings from all of the user's feeds into one virtual feed, the ability to save articles for later reading and various sorting options.

"Pageflakes is all about personalization and customization," said Ole Brandenburg, co-founder and CMO of Pageflakes. "Just a few days ago we announced the release of a variety of customization options, including various color and page layout themes. Launching such a versatile RSS reader once again shows that Pageflakes wants to provide users with a broad variety of options to choose from."

A New Mobile Headset From Logitech

Now that I have migrated to a Motion Tablet (LS800), I am looking for better ways to Experience Mobility as I travel. Today, Logitech released a Logitech Cordless Headset for PC and Mobile Phones. It looks pretty good and if it lives up to the hype, it will definitely be added to my mobile bag.

They indicate that the Cordless Headset for PC and Mobile Phones is versatile in that it can be used for hands-free and cords-free phone calls on both PCs and mobile phones. Hmmm...I like that!

There is a USB wireless receiver that plugs into a desktop PC or laptop for those that do not have Bluetooth. The headset can also be connected to any mobile phone with Bluetooth wireless technology. It has a range of 30 feet which is pretty typical. What I am particularly interested in is how loud the speaker is and if the new "WindStop technology" works well while outside.

It looks like we won't see it until October but I'll give it a try when it is available. The suggested retail price in the U.S. is $99.99 which is a little rich but if it works, I'll pay the premium.

    Xantrex PowerSource 400

Safe, Reliable, Long Lasting Alternative Power

It has been an amazing summer this year, warm, warmer and down right HOT! Not that that is unusual for summer but it has been an extraordinarily warm summer this year with a huge demand on the power grid. Some say that the weather has been affected by global warming…I am tending to think that they might be correct. However, it seemed as if the power companies have been able to handle it; I have not experienced any issues up until a couple of weeks ago when I was in Maine and all of a sudden we had a “blow” that came up on us instantaneously.

It was amazing to see the wind start to increase; the clouds appear as if we were going to have a major storm and the water just outside my window look as if I was in the middle of a major ocean storm. The wind…she was a blowing! To look up and see a huge pine tree bending as if it were a feather was in many respects awesome and yet scary. I am surrounded by huge pines and if one goes, it would be a “crushing” experience. I did have one go last spring…and I now have a renovated garage.

As fast as this storm came in, it disappeared in an instant. The lake became calm, the sun came back out and life went back to normal…well sort of. A tree did fall about a mile away and we were without power for a few hours. It was soon restored and life went back to being calm and relaxing but the talk in the town was “the blow”. We had a minor “event”; I guess you would call it a “micro burst” (a downburst covering an area of two and one half miles or less).

A week later I experienced a true “micro burst” back in Massachusetts where we had an instantaneous storm on a very hot day that caused major damage in and around my home. I was fortunate to have no damage but some neighbors were not as lucky. We lost power for several hours and as soon as it was restored it went out again for another 4 hours. Clearly, it is time to think about alternative power sources and just what I want to have.

I have a variety of power sources that I have accumulated over time. All are small temporary solutions for traveling but can be used to charge a cell phone or my iPAQs while at home. What I don’t have is a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply- Battery Backup) and with recent events I know I’m going to get caught on my computer doing something that is important and I will lose it all. So the search began …. and ended very quickly.

What I do have is a Xantrex PowerPack 400R, a portable AC and DC power source that can be used for a variety of electrical needs. It is a seven-in-one power unit that has been ideal as a personal security device in a blackout or a source of power for that “away from an outlet” tailgate party or for the do-it-yourselfer who needs portable or backup power for small power tools. The built-in 400 watt inverter with the sealed, non-spillable 20 amp-hour AGM battery provides a sense of security that you will be able to perform those basic charging needs in case of an emergency. Of course, the ability to use the 250 PSI air compressor for inflating tires and small sports equipment at an outside activity along with the ability to watch TV at tailgate party is an added plus!

As good as it is as a portable power source, it is not a UPS and it does not have the ability to run for five or more hours and that is what I am looking for. I wanted a solution that would provide me with alternative power that would guarantee me from losing current work as well as be able to maintain the ability to continue to work for a long time. In addition to having the ability to run my computer, I wanted the ability to run a big TV. As soon as I looked on the Xantrex site I saw what I needed, the PowerSource 400.

    What is the PowerSource 400?

It’s a UPS that is a perfect backup power solution for the small office or home. In the event of a power outage, it will supply uninterrupted backup power allowing you to continue to work and stay productive…..that is important to me. None of the solutions that I have seen will offer more than 30 minutes of power, but the extended runtime of the Xantrex PowerSource 400 was very intriguing to me. If it lasts as long as it is rated (up to eight hours), a list price of $199.99 seemed worth it. A little searching on the net can find some significant deals that make it even more enticing.

When my unit arrived, I was amazed at its weight - 32 lb (14.5 kg). It was hefty to say the least…I guessed that the battery was pretty substantial to have the heft that it had. The unit was packed securely with foam cushions protecting the unit from abuse while being shipped. It was wrapped in plastic and each side had a plastic sheet covering it to protect it from scratches. When I finally had it out of the box, it was a slick looking device.

The PowerSource 400 is slim, dark grey, a power outlet in the front and four in the rear with a power switch and LED readout on the top. There was a reset switch in the rear in the event there was an overload applied and it shuts down automatically. The built-in overload and over-temperature protection will definitely ensure a longer life expectancy for the PowerSource. I had hoped that the outlets would ALL accommodate use of devices with large power packs. If the outlets were spread out, then that could have been accomplished. Hopefully in the next iteration they will design it to accommodate multiple devices using large power supplies

It seemed pretty basic, a plug for AC charging, some outlets and the promise that it will switch to backup power automatically when a power outage occurs. It seemed pretty reassuring and as long as it happens seamlessly so that the electronic devices that are hooked up to it won’t sense the power outage, I will be very happy.

Of course I did check the available power before I plugged it in and it read 90%. That was good but decided that I would plug it in and charge it up fully before I tried it. It was late afternoon so I let it charge over night. As it was charging, the LED would flash a signal indicating it was charging and then flash what the total charge was. There was a fan running quietly inside keeping the unit cool…I liked that. When I looked at the PowerSource 400 in the morning, it read 100% so it was time to give it a try.

I plugged in a couple of items (a laptop, a cell phone, a portable DVD player and a 3-way table lamp). As I tried different items, I was surprised that the wattage being used was not significant. For example, the 3-way light did not register any wattage at the lowest level and as I increased to the second, it registered 50-60 and at the highest setting, it registered 90-100.

If I used just the laptop, it registered 0 then 40 if there was activity on the laptop. So I tried my router, DSL modem, Wireless landline phone and two cell phones charging and there was 0 showing for watts being consumed. I had to assume that wattage use less than 40 was not able to be displayed.

Well, I needed a test to determine the length of time it would run using a device with a constant draw of wattage. I decided to run a 21” LCD TV that displayed a constant 90-100 watts of usage. With a full charge, the UPS ran for 3.5 hours before the audible alarm sounded indicating that there was only minutes left of available power. Considering the wattage being consumed, it was a decent battery life. In theory, the alarm means there is approximately 10 minutes of run time remaining. I found it to be about 3-5 minutes depending on the devices being used.

The next test was to run something that consumed less wattage so I chose my laptop. With a fully charged battery and normal use all day, I was able to run my laptop for 9.5 consecutive hours. The wattage fluctuated from a reading of 0-40 throughout the test period.

From my use over the past couple of weeks, this 400 watt inverter with five 115 VAC power outlets has provided me ample ability to guarantee safe and continuous computing in the event of a lengthy power outage. More importantly, part of my intention is to use this power supply at my lake house where the power does go out frequently during the winter months. Besides my computing needs, I heat my home with two Vermont Castings propane stoves. They do not require any electricity to provide heat and use a wireless battery operated thermostat. However there is a low amp fan that comes on once the temperature rises to a certain level. Generally power outages are for short periods of time but when I am not at the house, I want the comfort that the fan on my heat source will function and this device will clearly provide that.

When power goes out, there is a very bright blue LED light on that back of the unit that turns on automatically. I was amazed at how much light it did provide; enough to be able to see where outlets are located in the event you needed to add another device to the PowerSource 400.

In the event you need to relocate the PowerSource 400, there are integrated handles at the top on the unit that allow for easy transportation if you need to move the device. I found them quite convenient as I moved it around testing different devices.

I have been impressed with the Xantrex PowerSource 400. It looks good, performs well and gives that added assurance that your power needs will be met in the event of an emergency. It is a nice feeling to know that in case of an emergency power outage, I am protected!

How To Prep Laptops For Airport Security

K.C. Jones from TechWeb had an interesting article on how to prep your laptops for Airport Security. I find it very interesting and somewhat intriguing to see how companies are handling the current crisis and what some are planning for the future. What will be the #1 issue that companies will face? Security of sensitive data?

    K. C. said:
Some companies are beginning to rethink laptop security policies in light of the United Kingdom's ban on electronic devices in airplane cabins.

John Livingston, chairperson and CEO of Absolute Software, said in a prepared statement:
Although this greatly impacts international business travelers, this could also foreshadow a broader ban and tighter security restrictions on a global basis.

Read K.C.'s article here and hopefully you will pick up a tip on how you can prep your laptop.

    Reward!!

This is too important not to post. With a little luck, someone out there just might see it and remember this post. To see a larger picture of the missing computer, click on the image to the right. Let's hope that the computer is recovered and the personal information of the veterans who have served our country is not compromised.

Unisys Offers Reward for Information Leading to Recovery of Missing Desktop Computer

Unisys Corp., in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), today announced it is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the recovery of the previously announced missing desktop computer. This computer contains personal information on veterans who were treated at VA medical facilities in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Unisys is working with both the VA Office of the Inspector General and the FBI in the investigation of the recent disappearance of the computer from its Reston, Va., corporate facility. The computer has a clear plastic side and external lighting (see picture).

Anyone who can provide information that leads to the recovery of the missing computer should call 1-800/CALL-FBI.

    Did You Know?

I've spent a lot of time the past two weeks using a tablet to work and play on the net. It has been quite an experience and coupled with my smartphone, I have found my ability to Experience Mobility has increased 10 fold while "on the road". Still, I am always looking for ways to increase my performance and ability to find items that are of interest and I did today.

Did you know that Google has added a new link to their search page? Now when you go to Google, you see an added link for Video. Clearly, this added link is nice and certainly will drive more traffic to Google Video. Hitwise reported that Google's Video traffic more than doubled on the first day. It is nice to have an added feature but it sure would be nice to see a few more links on Google to make finding items of interest just a little easier.

But wait....there is one and it's called Googdesk and it is Google smarter!

Google definitely offers some terrific services, but trying to find everything...whew! Especially if you are in a hurry! Well, the folks at Googdesk have created a single page that lets you access all of Google's services and special searches easily...it is very cool!

Try it on your PDA, Mobile Phone or your desktop...it is cool!

It should be noted that Googdesk is NOT affiliated with or endorsed by Google.

No Question - America's Got Talent!

OK, it's the weekend and time for "other stuff" as my lovely wife would say. So I thought I'd share a video that was sent to me today. I was amazed...floored...in awe! It is a great diversion from the "Mobile Experience"...hey wait, with this ability, I bet they really Experience Mobility on the fly!

I hope you enjoy Quick Change Artists as much as I did!

    I Love PC World!

Yup, there is no question about it...I Love PC World. With all the new items I see, magazines I read, and items that I "catch" on the net, PC World NEVER lets me down. I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't learn or find something of interest from PC World.

For example, today I saw a neat item to download and of course, it was FREE. So what did I see that I wanted? Click the READ MORE! just below and you will see.

    ChoiceMail Free

Some spam filters assume that you want to see almost every message, while others assume that you want to see almost none. ChoiceMail Free combines blacklist and whitelist technologies to ensure that your POP e-mail program refuses messages from blocked addresses and lets your desired e-mail through without a hitch. Use the built-in permission rules to stop likely spam, and add your own touches to customize the blockade.

You can also activate unknown-sender registration, which returns e-mail to senders whose addresses ChoiceMail doesn't recognize, asking them to identify themselves. Usually only people who really know you (and like you enough to deal with this small irritation) will respond to such messages. Safe message previewing lets you look at any messages you're not sure about--without letting potentially infected spam loose on your system.

As its name indicates, ChoiceMail Free is a no-fee program, but online support costs $20 per year. The more full-featured ChoiceMail One--which blocks spam to AOL, Hotmail, MSN, and Yahoo--includes the cost of a one-year support subscription. A 14-day trial of ChoiceMail One is downloadable from the vendor's site.

    Version: 3.1
    Price: Free

    Back-To-School - What Do I Buy?

It is getting close to that time when either you or your kids are going to be heading back to school. There are plenty of items to buy but the question is "which one?".

Cisco Cheng from PC Magazine has a pretty decent Buying Guide: Back-To-School Laptops that you might want to look at. He said:
It might feel like you just got out of class, but it's never too early to start shopping for back to school. This guide, along with our review comparisons, has all the information you need.

It's a good start if you are looking and are just not sure what you want. You can see Cisco's Buying Guide here

So how soon before we see 5G?

Change in the wireless industry is fast and furious! I always find it amazing that they just don't let a technology settle in before they make the next change but 4G is coming and they have not completed rolling out 3G. It sort of makes you wonder "how soon before we see 5G". Change keeps us alert so that is a good thing...I guess.

In any event, I had to say that because I just read an article that Marguerite Reardon from C/NET wrote about Speedier wireless on the way via 4G. It was prety good and worth taking a look at. In part, Marguerite said:
Carriers have barely rolled out their new third-generation wireless networks, and they're already talking about the fourth generation, which could offer affordable high-speed Internet access for consumer electronics devices on the go.

Imagine a day when parents in California attending their daughter's soccer game can stream all the action live directly from their camcorder to grandma and grandpa in Florida, or a day when you can instantly download the latest U2 album onto your iPod.

Now that is being able to Experience Mobility! You can read Marguerite's article here.

Ed Hansberry gets a discussion going...

...and it is VERY INTERESTING! Yup, Ed has started a discussion over at Pocket PC Thoughts that I found quite intriguing.

Ed, a Microsoft MVP, loves to get into the "meat" of a problem so he has decided to have a little fun. He has started a discussion on a little oddity that you just might find interesting so click the READ MORE! below to see what Ed has started.

Well, if you are reading this, then you clicked because your interest peaked. This is what Ed had to say:

Now here is an interesting picture of Windows Mobile that came from a fellow MVP. This particular shot came from a Verizon XV6700 Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 5.1.1700 (Build 14354.0.1.1). How many things can you find wrong with it?

Let's have some fun. What strange things have you seen on your Windows Mobile device? Screenshots are a plus. I actually have another Windows Mobile oddity that I'll post in this thread a bit later this weekend.

So this is pretty interesting...did you look at the picture? Well, why not join in the discussion over at Pocket PC Thoughts and offer up what you find to be wrong. Hey Stimey, did I fool you?

Text Messaging, Web Surfing, and e-mail Capabilities

What else do you want? For some they want more but for a huge segment of the population, this is what they want and Sony is counting on that. From my initial impressions, I think the new Sony mylo ("my life online") is pretty cool and will be extremely popular in the "student" market...especially on college campus'.

Jay Wrolstad from Mobile Tech Today said in a recent article that "The new Mylo personal communicator from Sony is designed for those who want a small portable device for connecting to the Internet in addition to a mobile phone. ".

This is a very cool looking device and certainly will have broad appeal for folks looking for a way to get Web access as they are trying to Experience Mobility. The feature set appears to be pretty strong for this device...I expect it will be a big hit. I keep thinking though that as folks use this device they will want to do more and more...hmmm, maybe we will see a re-birth of the Pocket PC.

Check out Jay's article here. It is brief but gives a little insight into the mylo.

    Want More Ringtones?

I'm just a "basic" ringtone guy...give me that "old phone" ring and I'm happy but there is a HUGE segment of folks that like different and varied ringtones so I thought I'd post this item.

(Thumbplay is now available to subscribers of Verizon, Cingular, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint)

Check it out and if you like it, download what you want and Thumbplay will have your charges added to your Verizon bill.

    ROK Launches Mobile TV Service

ROK Entertainment Group has launched the popular ROK TV streaming mobile TV service in the United States. Users can now go to www.roktv.com and subscribe to thirteen channels of content for only $0.99 per channel. ROK has licensed content from well over 50 content providers, enough for dozens of channels, which will be going live throughout the coming weeks.

However, this is not just another re-hash of the typical mobile video channel offerings. ROK bills its service as one that focuses on niche, independent, alternative, urban, and international content such as TV Reggaeton, OutThere TV, and Noche De Salsa. This is largely due to ROK's UK experience that has shown mobile TV to be a '3x5 proposition' where consumers' usage tends to take on a 'three minutes at a time, five times a day' pattern and where these types of channels are proving as popular as major brand names. As such, ROK TV's programming line-up is being designed to be the latest, coolest, content available.

"We see large demographic and affinity segments of active mobile media consumers that are being underserved by the content offerings of existing mobile video services," says Jonathan Kendrick, Chairman of ROK who continues, "But we're not turning away from major entertainment, news or sports programming, in fact we fully intend to showcase the power of major media brands and sponsors in a variety of unique ways as the service grows." ROK TV currently includes a range of live news, sports, music, cartoons and entertainment channels in its UK lineup.

ROK TV, which runs over 2.5G and 3G networks, has been live in the UK since late last year. It was recently reviewed in a report by Strategy Analytics and, by a vote of users, came in #2 out of four services. Even though ROK TV was running over 2.5G it beat out 3G services -- Hutchison's '3' and Orange -- both run by US-based MobiTV.

To get ROK TV, users go to www.roktv.com, register and download the software to their Smartphone, Windows Mobile or Java device. Then with a few clicks build their own custom package of channels. "It's a simple process now, but getting even easier in the next few weeks," says Kendrick. "And to help motivate people through the process, we've got an incentive for them."

That incentive is one month of free ROK TV for all new subscribers.

In addition to basic streaming channels, ROK TV will soon be adding

On-Demand and Premium programming. "We're going to keep adding features and functionality to the service, including those never available in the U.S.," says Bruce Renny, Head of Global Marketing for ROK.

One of those features is ROK STAR, which lets the viewer interact with Mobile TV without ever leaving the viewing experience. "Basically, a viewer can be watching a game show or shopping channel, press the 'star' key, and a transparent overlay rolls over the screen which lets the user interact with the program. This could be anything from voting, to messaging, to purchasing a product or ring tone, without having to stop watching the program. It is essentially the complete ITV experience on your mobile phone."

ROK Entertainment Group recently set up offices in Beverly Hills, CA and plans to launch a number of innovative mobile products and services. "We're looking forward to working with many partners in the U.S., including MNO's, hardware manufacturers, and content providers," said Renny.
